Social workers must be thoroughly aware of these programs to support clients and fight for their needs appropriately. Acknowledging the role of cultural competence in healthcare provision regarding Jim’s preference for African-American healthcare providers is critical. Unfortunately, systemic disparities in healthcare make it difficult for African Americans to obtain African-American healthcare providers. This is a great post. I value your thoughts on the knowledge that social workers require for safety net programs like Medicaid and SSI. We must be aware of these resources and aid in their availability for our customers. I’m delighted to learn that the social worker, in this case, was able to help Jim qualify for SSI and get the care he required, including couples therapy. You make a good point regarding how Jim felt more at ease using African-American medical experts because of their superior comprehension of his culture and the lack of prejudice he encountered. It is regrettable if access issues to chosen healthcare providers develop because of insurance restrictions (Baicker et al., 2023). Your description of the micro policy advocacy interventions the social worker uses to assist Jim is precisely how I would do it. Social workers must have a strong understanding and familiarity with the existing safety net programs to be able to assist clients. Furthermore, they must possess the necessary communication skills in order to demonstrate the programs and how they can be effectively utilized by the client effectively. In sum, these learned practices are essential for social workers to facilitate policy advancement and ultimately, social justice.

Why did Jim feel far more comfortable with African American health professionals than European American ones? Why is it difficult for him and other African Americans to gain access to African American health professionals? What strategies would people like Jim need to use in the meantime?

jim’s experience with African American health professionals underscored the importance of cultural considerations in healthcare delivery. Jim felt more at ease with African American health professionals due to their shared cultural background, which gave him a sense of familiarity. Unfortunately, it is often difficult for African Americans to gain access to African American health professionals due to structural inequalities in healthcare delivery. Strategies such as promoting equity in healthcare access and utilizing existing community resources can be employed in the meantime. Furthermore, the importance of cultural competence in healthcare should not be overlooked.

As social workers, it is our job to have the knowledge of resources that our clients may need access to. In this scenario, the social worker is able to help Jim see the light in all the darkness he has endured. Jim was able to apply for SSI; he was able to receive high-level care from the hospital, even from white providers. Jim and his wife were able to go to couples counseling, which covered her insurance. He was even able to understand that the loss of his son was not his fault and that he could not help a random act of violence.

4.) Jim felt more comfortable being seen by African American health professionals because they would have a better understanding of his culture, and he did not feel judged. It might be difficult to get access to certain health professionals due to one’s insurance or Medicaid. Every doctor’s office takes different insurance and Medicaid. This makes it harder for people to have access to the physicians they would want to be seen by. In the meantime, they can be seen by the emergency rooms, urgent care, or the normal doctor they see until they can get into the doctor they would like.

5.) First, the social worker listened. She empathized with Jim. She made him feel understood. The social worker helped Jim with many things. She complimented Jim on how he had controlled his drug use so far. She gave him respect even though he did not have insurance and the places he felt comfortable being seen had shut down. The social worker helped Jim see that he was not at fault for his son’s death. She also helped him get his diagnosis from doctors so he could apply for SSI, and then when that was denied, she helped him file an appeal and sent him to legal is. She still helps support him and his wife in getting marriage counseling.
