Mathew is a young African-American boy with learning disabilities. Students like Mathew have difficulties acquiring basic skills in academic content due to the disability that hinders them from understanding simple written or spoken instructions. Compared to other learners of his age, Mathew is unable to learn and do simple things like feeding himself or taking himself to the toilet. Additionally, Mathew is unique because he does not communicate effectively with other learners.
Include salient information regarding the student identity (e.g,. race, age, gender, disability), family, interests in school, extra-curricular activities, and unique cultural experiences that characterize the case student.
Mathew, a 4-year-old, represents the plight of African-American learners with learning disabilities. His parents seem uninformed about their child disability hence reluctant to collaborate with teachers in addressing Mathew’s needs. I believe that perception has greatly contributed to Mathew’s problems not being addressed on time. Additionally, because Mathew comes from a low-income earning family, this might also be a hinderance to addressing his learning disabilities.
Discuss specific strengths and needs (language, cognitive, behavioral) to be taken into account when designing and implementing instructional activities for the child.
Addressing the specific needs of children with learning disabilities requires a specific focus on individual achievement, individual progress and individual learning because these learners present varied language and skills acquisition levels. To help learners in the category of Mathew, teachers should design their instructional activities by making them specific and individualized by making use of intensive remedial instruction to cater for their struggles. As an educator, it is important to be patient with a learner like Mathew. Remedial interventions will help eliminate effects caused by the learning disability while at the same time empowering the student to have control of their learning.
Consider the multiple contexts (e.g., school, family, peers, extra-curriculars) in which the student functions and how they are perceived in those environments. How consistent is the child’s “perception of self” with the image conveyed by others (staff, family, peers or in the “written record” of their schooling) as well as with your own observations?
Mathew’s low self-esteem level is caused by his learning disability, which makes him feel frustrated most of the time. When a child has low self-esteem, especially due to discrimination at school, they tend to develop disruptive emotional, behavioral, and academic problems. The child feels out of place because other children of his age are able to follow certain instructions, like eating and going to the washroom, whereas Mathew is unable to do these simple chores. This could be why he lacks a sense of belonging because he believes his peers, teachers, and other adults around the school do not understand him.
