Amy Richlin’ Not Before Homosexuality’ partly opposes the historical and constructivist approach to sexuality, as presented by Michel Foucault. Foucault claims that the term homosexuality is an identity category developed in the late 1800s by psychologists. Although Richlin accepts that the perspectives of Foucault and Kenneth Dover influenced the thoughts of historians, the author disagrees with numerous of their views. First, Richlin argues that historians often overlook oppressed prehistoric males who had sexual relations with other men. The article reflects on the extent of these sexuality issues and demonstrates their complexity. Richlin questions the terms to be applied when referring to historical gender structures and the associated concerns of constructivism and essentialism. Besides, the article reflects the everyday use and understanding of the word’ homosexuality.’ The author argues that individuals in the contemporary world should use the term to illustrate the Roman Cinaedus since they were maltreated like modern homosexuals. However, Richlin claims that the term ‘homosexual’ should not refer to Romans who penetrated other males because today’s people slur and disgrace the males whom the past Romans praised. The author emphasizes that it is essential to question whether the application of the term ‘homosexual’ may be perplexing and misrepresentative when referring to pre-modern communities.
