Leadership Video Reflection Paper – Creativity Under Pressure

Video Summary

In the ‘creativity under pressure’ video, Todd Henry highlights the aspects that individuals fail in when emphasizing others. The principal areas that people fail to consider include the management of energy and unnecessary creativity. People are often caught between meeting work deadlines and delivering the expected results. Therefore, they tend to manage time and forget to manage their energy. As a result, most individuals achieve the set goals but lack any energy to undertake activities that could lead to personal growth.

Similarly, individuals are inclined to conduct tasks for which they are rewarded. For instance, very few people create concepts that their bosses do not remunerate or require. As a result, few people take part in the process of innovation. Consequently, most individuals attain brilliance and health but remain unreliable (TEDx Talks, 2012). The lack of reliability leads to a loss of opportunities because people are incapable of meeting the dynamic needs in the market. Internally, individuals become frustrated and disengaged with their daily activities.

When individuals are under pressure, they tend to pick the first readily available solution. This process of solving problems does not involve any creativity. To include authenticity and creativity in daily activities, it is essential to focus, which highlighting the problem at hand. The lack of presence in the process of finding a solution is a challenge. People are always trying to address external aspects more than they do the work that is in front of them. This leads to a loss of time and concentration. Relationships with other people who can be helpful in finding solutions are critical to gaining effectiveness. Management of energy is essential in creating an environment that nurtures innovative ideas. Stimuli are necessary because people should focus on information that leads to growth. Personal curiosities are important in gaining creativity by tapping into the right content (TEDx Talks, 2012). These aspects are identified as important in ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and the ability to innovate.

The leadership video’s connection to the course content

The leadership video provides useful insight into aspects that individuals, leaders, or followers ignore. Concerning the content of the course, the video is highly relevant. It highlights aspects that are important for sustained innovation. Subsequently, the video provides a comprehensive breakdown of the issues that affect an individual’s ability to retain creativity. It further highlights the elements that enable retention of mediocrity in organizations. Regarding change, the video usefully highlights issues that inhibit the personal process of transition.

According to the speaker, habit, lack of intentionality, and mental presence inhibit the ability to achieve positive change. These issues affect the individuals’ productivity leading to poor work results. Therefore, an individual’s ability to avoid these issues and offer more significant attention to the current work is essential in ensuring they can drive, undergo, or initiate change. Finally, innovation is a constant aspect that demands deliberate action (Collins, 2018).

As the speaker highlights, most individuals are too preoccupied with meeting deadlines mindlessly, which leaves them exhausted and frustrated (TEDx Talks, 2012). The lack of energy to participate in any other activity that can sustain innovation places an individual’s reliability at risk. The lack of time and motivation to engage in unnecessary creativity under low-risk conditions stifles innovation. As a result, most individuals rotate around the same concepts that fast become outdated and incapable of meeting the dynamic needs and demands of the marketplace. As a result, the lack of innovation causes people to lose opportunities that could have been utilized in a better way. Therefore, the video’s relevance to the course content is significant because it points out issues and offers solutions.

Lesson learned from the video

The video is quite educative at a personal level. I have learned the need to manage my energy. It seems popular to schedule activities and meetings without leaving any allowance for rest or self-care. However, this leads to exhaustion of the mind as individuals continue to think that their effectiveness is dependent on the amount of work or tasks they complete. Over time, one becomes disengaged due to mental exhaustion. In addition, their health deteriorates significantly due to physical exertion. The result is consistent mediocrity and lack of innovation. Having experienced these issues in my personal and academic life, I intend to initiate change that will lead to more mental presence, physical health, constant creativity, mindfulness, and intentionality (Pal, Hauck, & Goldstein, 2018). This change means that I will have to eliminate some of the unhelpful and exhausting habits, yet popular.

Additionally, I have to mindfully allocate time for each project and leave some for rest. The chosen projects will include a personal project that allows me to think creatively and critically without undue pressure. This should spur continuous creativity that allows constant innovation. Most importantly, I will gain consistent reliability and relevance because of the positive and intentional changes I initiate in my daily routines.
