Exploring Managerial Pathways- Insights into Leadership, Values, and Industry Alignment
My previous supervisor has always been my role model in my marketing career. I have always admired his commitment to his roles and responsibilities and his willingness to learn from the people around him despite their level of experience and rank in the organization. He has also shaped my commitment to rowing my career by influencing my perspective toward various job and academic opportunities. My decision to choose him for this interview was influenced by my experience working as one of his mentees during my internship at his organization. I also knew he could create time for the interview because he is always willing to help his former and current mentees develop their careers.
Preparation Process
I took one week to prepare for the interview because I had to ensure that every step in the preparation process was followed. My first step was contacting my former supervisor. I wrote him an email expressing my interest in interviewing him and the aim of the interview. I also requested that he call or email me to schedule the interview. The next step was preparing the interview questions while waiting for the supervisor to respond to my email. He contacted me after two days, and we agreed on the day and time the interview would be conducted. The final step was familiarizing myself with the Microsoft Teams application because the supervisor selected it for the interview. I also ensured that my internet connection was stable and that my laptop had all the features required to conduct a video interview, such as a microphone and clear camera.
Expectations
My initial expectation before the interview was that the supervisor would begin by asking me about what I have been doing since I left their organization and what I am currently doing. I also expected the supervisor to give me detailed responses to my questions and engage me in the conversation by asking me some questions relating to the concepts in the interview. The supervisor met and even exceeded my expectations because he gave me more information about his career than I expected. For instance, when I asked him about the experiences that have influenced his career, he gave me a detailed history of his career and the challenges he has overcome to get to where he is. He also gave me a list of options that I can consider to prepare for my career path in the near future, including organizations that can help me grow my career.
Themes
One of the themes that emerged during my interview was influencer marketing. The supervisor talked about how understanding influencer marketing can shape my marketing career because it is an emerging trend that many organizations are considering to increase brand awareness and exposure to potential customers. The second theme was the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in marketing. The supervisor mentioned that I should learn how to use AI in marketing because many organizations are embracing it to generate marketing content and get data-driven insights, hence an increase in the demand for marketers who understand the AI concept and how to create algorithms that can be used for marketing and decision-making. Discussing the use of AI in marketing made me wish that we had covered Big Data Analytics because I would want to learn more about it from an expert and understand how it will shape the role of marketers in the future.
Personal and Professional Insights
The interview helped me realize that I have been limiting my career growth by avoiding risks that could advance my career. For instance, I learned that my fear of trying something new influences the jobs I apply for because I am afraid of starting a job in a new state or country, which limits my options, thus limiting my career growth. Therefore, I must consider applying for jobs outside my comfort zone to achieve maximum career growth. I also learned that I need to stay informed about the trends in the marketing sectors, such as the use of technology in marketing, because some trends could reshape the role of marketers and increase the demand for marketers with specific skills. I also learned that it is crucial to consider working in different organizations because each work environment contributes to developing new skills and competencies and increases expertise in the selected career field. Therefore, moving forward, I will consider changing my work environment whenever I get an opportunity in another organization.
Conclusion
The interview with my former supervisor was a great learning experience because I developed new personal and professional insights. I learned that I need to take risks to leverage opportunities that can enhance my career growth and acquire new skills and competencies based on the trends in my career so that I can compete favorably for the opportunities within my career. My main observation from the interview is that career growth is shaped by a person’s experiences and the ability to overcome the challenges faced in the career development process. Therefore, career development requires resilience and the ability to identify and leverage opportunities within the career field.
