Chapter 8 Summary – Communication Disorders

Communication disorders involve various problems, including speech, language, and hearing. Children with communication disorders tend to underperform in their education because they struggle to read and understand concepts. These learners may not communicate because of failure to understand speech sounds. In such a situation, special educators must collaborate to help these learners overcome such barriers to learning. What the Chapter Covers 

In Chapter 8 of the book Exceptional Children: An Introduction to Special Education, the author analyzes how educators could detect communication disorders in their learners. As such, teachers can look for signs such as the inability of learners to use language in communication and speech disorders or the failure to employ elements of speech in communication (Heward 279). Speech and language development in children occurs during their first few years of life. The knowledge of skills in language in learners helps teachers differentiate those with communication disorders from those without these disorders (Heward 280). However, because children are brought up in varied environments, these environments vary widely and may influence language acquisition. Despite these varied environments, children above five years should have developed their complete skills in communication (Heward 282). Any child having problems in language and speech above the age of five should therefore be considered to have language and speech impairments.
