Assignment 1 Importance Of Becoming A Global Citizen

Assignment 1 Importance Of Becoming A Global Citizen

Global citizenship is an important aspect that promotes peace and harmony in the world. In the process of globalization, individuals need to learn how to co-exist with each other. The differences between people and groups demand sensitivity, appreciation, and understanding. These aspects facilitate the process of coexistence. They are obtained through various experiences, which an individual must pay attention to.

Describe and explain a clear distinction between “globalism” and “globalization” after viewing the video and reading the article.

Globalism and globalization are different terms that have varying impacts. Globalism is a notion or idea that tends to favor globalization. It presumes that globalization is a positive occurrence with a similar effect. Globalism assumes that goods, people, and information can cross national borders without any restrictions. Globalization, on the other hand, is the actual spread of information, people, and jobs across national borders (Stucke, 2009). Globalization manifests through better standards of living due to poverty reduction, access to life-saving immunizations, and education, infrastructural development, better systems of transport, and traffic reduction.

Describe how being a global citizen in the world of advanced technology can be beneficial to your success in meeting your personal, academic, and professional goals.

A global citizen is aware of the world and understands their role, respects diversity, comprehends different aspects of the world, values social justice, is active in the community, and is accountable (Bulut, 2013). Being a global citizen in the world of advanced technology can be beneficial to an individual in different ways. Initially, the characteristics of a global citizen enable an individual to meet their personal goals using the different resources that are available. The academic and professional goals are also met with the help of people from different backgrounds. In addition, the skills and knowledge that are gained while interacting with people from other communities play a role in ensuring an individual is successful.

Explain why there has been disagreement between theorists about the definition of global citizenship and develop your own definition of global citizenship after reading the article by Reysen and Katzarska-Miller.

Global citizenship has been challenging for theorists in terms of definition. The confusion arises from the theorists’ different perspectives and disciplines. Some use the political, and developmental, while others educational and developmental for definition purposes. To defuse the confusion among theorists, Reysen used values to explain to the readers the term global citizenship (Reysen, 2013). I believe that global citizenship is one’s ability to possess positive elements that include an appreciation of other individuals within the community and oneself. An individual who can do this is able to obtain the values of a global citizen, which are emphasized in the article.

Choose two of the six outcomes of global citizenship from the article (i.e., intergroup empathy, valuing diversity, social justice, environmental sustainability, intergroup helping, and the level of responsibility to act for the betterment of this world).

Valuing Diversity

Valuing diversity is defined as the individual’s ability to appreciate and value other cultures within their environments (Reysen, 2013). In a diverse world with people from different backgrounds, it is important for individuals to live in harmony. This harmony can arise from learning about other cultures and appreciating the differences instead of isolating these groups. Diversity is important because it enriches all environments. However, handling and valuing diversity is important in ensuring that the benefits are maximized. My ability to value diversity makes others comfortable around me and makes it easy to achieve my goals with the assistance of other individuals.

Social Justice

Social justice refers to the fair and humane treatment of all individuals (Reysen, 2013). Preservation of human rights is important because it protects vulnerable groups from harm, which may be caused intentionally or unintentionally. A global citizen should identify any social injustice and condemn it without fear. The ability to highlight and condemn social injustices displays an individual’s humanity and empathy towards other people. Global citizens provide a voice for vulnerable groups of people, which leads to positive changes because the relevant authorities take action. Such exposure of human rights violations also leads to policy formulation for the protection of other groups in the future.

Describe at least two personal examples or events in your life that illustrate the development of global citizenship based on the two outcomes you chose.

First Personal Example of Valuing Diversity

While working in a health facility that carries out outreach programs for the elderly, I meet patients from different races, genders, ages, and nationalities. Dealing with these patients requires that all health workers remain receptive. To deliver care that is satisfying to all patients, cultural sensitivity and awareness are critical. This means that I have to listen to patients and understand their cultural perspectives regarding their illnesses, treatment, and care options. As a result, I have mastered the skill of seeking to understand other individuals and their different perspectives.

Second Personal Example of Social Justice

I visited my friend’s child in school and found one of the teachers abusing them verbally. The verbal abuse was subtle and insinuated that the child did not deserve to attend the prestigious school due to their racial background. I informed the parents and urged them to have a talk with the school’s principal about the teacher’s misconduct. The principal was glad about the boldness and warned the teacher from discriminating against other students. This experience informed me about the empowerment that an oppressed victim attains when someone condemns social injustices.

Identify two specific general education courses.

The sociology course has been instrumental in developing my ethical values. These values ensure that I demonstrate humanity and empathy to other human beings. It also cultivates my ability to call out injustices instead of allowing people to suffer in my presence. The general psychology course has made it possible to understand other individuals as a way to offer the assistance and empathy they need. I also learned about different strategies to listen and indulge others. These are important in my career and enable me to carry on global citizenship.

Conclusion

Global citizenship is important in ensuring that individuals are successful and communities remain accommodative for all individuals. Developing global citizens is an individual and collective activity. The main outcomes of global citizenship include empathy, social justice, awareness, appreciation for cultural diversity, care, and accountability. Different experiences shape people into global citizens. However, it is important that all individuals pay attention to each experience and obtain or apply the necessary skills.
