Alabama has three licensure levels and one certification for social work. All applicants for licensure and certification must be aged 19 years and above and adhere to the professional code of ethics provided by the board (ABSWE, n.d.-c). The first licensure level is the licensed bachelor social worker (LBSW) (ABSWE, n.d.-b). Applicants for LBSW licensure must possess a bachelor’s degree from an authorized college or university (ABSWE, n.d.-c). Also, they must have completed a social work program that has been accredited or is in the process of accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (ABSWE, n.d.-c). The second licensure level is the licensed master of social work (LMSW) (ABSWE, n.d.-b). Applicants for LMSW licensure must possess either a master’s or doctorate in social work from an institution that has been accredited or is in the process of accreditation by the CSWE (ABSWE, n.d.-c). The third licensure level is the licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) (ABSWE, n.d.-b). Applicants for LICSW must possess either a master’s or doctorate in social work (SW) from an institution that has been accredited or is in the process of accreditation by the CSWE (ABSWE, n.d.-c).  Also, the applicant must be an LMSW. Furthermore, the applicant must possess 2 or more years of post-masters or post-doctoral experience in SW practice under the supervision of a LICSW (ABSWE, n.d.-c). An example of certification is private independent practice (ABSWE, n.d.-b). Eligibility criteria: possess a valid LICSW license (ABSWE, n.d.-b). In addition, the applicant must have worked for three years on a full-time basis or 5 years on a part-time basis after acquiring their master’s or doctorate (ABSWE, n.d.-b). Alternatively, the applicant must have worked for 1 year on a full-time basis or 2 years on a part-time basis in a specified field after acquiring their master’s or doctorate (ABSWE, n.d.-b).

Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing education (CE) equips licensees with pertinent knowledge and skills. All applicants must complete training in child abuse and neglect reporting (ABSWE, n.d.-a). LBSWs must complete 30 hours of CE (ABSWE, n.d.-a). Out of these hours, 10 must involve a live classroom session, whereas three must address ethics (ABSWE, n.d.-a). Similarly, LMSWs must complete 30 hours of CE (ABSWE, n.d.-a). Out of these hours, 10 must involve a live classroom session, whereas three must address ethics (ABSWE, n.d.-a). 3 hours of clinical practice must be completed by LMSWs designated in clinical work (ABSWE, n.d.-a). LICSWs must complete 30 hours. Out of these hours, 10 must involve a live classroom session, three must address ethics, and 3 hours should address clinical practice (ABSWE, n.d.-a). Examples of educational activities include accredited academic courses, accredited workshops, and self-directed learning (ABSWE, n.d.-a).
