Using Discourse Ethics in Business Decision-Making

Discourse ethics infer that there are no definite moral values, and people can solve ethical dilemmas by engaging in a logical dialogue. To successfully apply discourse ethics, the dialogue must align with democratic principles, including non-coercion, peace, logic, and consensual. An open discourse facilitates conflicting parties to reach a compromise that benefits both parties. One of the situations that may necessitate a discourse between a corporation and the local community is environmental sustainability. On the one hand, the manufacturing company creates multiple jobs for the local population and improves economic growth. On the flip side, the manufacturing plant may be releasing toxic waste to a nearby river, posing a significant threat to environmental sustainability. To resolve such a crisis, the company must engage in a discourse with the local community and reach a sustainable resolution (Leung, 2002). The most viable negotiated resolution to this conflict is to have the polluting firm pay cleanup costs.

Discourse is likely to succeed in this situation because it encourages inclusivity. All stakeholders, including those with divergent and minority opinions, feel important since they are listened to and their ideals considered (Velasquez, 2018). In the above situation, community members, the firm, and authorities will engage in a constructive negotiation to deal with the issue. Secondly, a discourse allows an open exchange of ideas relating to environmental conservation. Different stakeholders will give their viewpoints, allowing the firm to explore various ethical frameworks applicable to a moral issue. Besides, discourse facilitates consensus-building among conflicting parties (Velasquez, 2018). Sometimes, conflicting parties cannot reach an absolute agreement. Nonetheless, a comprehensive discourse drives stakeholders toward a common ground. A common round is when none of the parties attain their preferred solutions but reach an acceptable compromise.
