The Modern Dilemma- Are We Too Dependent on Computers?
Computers have become crucial in people’s day-to-day activities after their invention years back and their capabilities to perform numerous functions. Doubtless, computers make life easier in many ways, which has led to their usage even more, especially after they have been adopted by many people today. The social use of computers has allowed people to meet virtually people they have never met before. Besides, they can work from home. By saying this, it suffices to maintain that this paper will explore the importance of computers to humans and whether human society depends so much on computers.
Foremost, it is crucial to point out that modern society is heavily dependent on these machines, which inevitably have positive and negative repercussions. Many would argue that the uses of computers far outweigh the negative impacts today. They maintain they play an everyday role in our lives. In homes, these devices are used for various activities, including payment of bills online, watching movies, home tutoring, games, accessing the internet, and accessing social media. In the medical field, these machines are used to maintain a patient’s database, diagnosis, live monitoring, and even x-rays (“Basic Applications of Computer,” 2021). Today, surgeons have employed robotic devices to perform surgeries that require delicate expertise and conduct these surgeries remotely. Virtual reality technologies have also been used to train learners.
Besides, when it comes to entertainment, computers are being used in the watching of movies, and online games. The MIDI devices, for example, are essential in the recording of music by using artificial instruments. Computers are used extensively to manage inventories, develop virtual sample products, make interior designs, video conferencing, and design purposes, among several other functions. Also, the online market has witnessed various revolutions in its capability to sell products to inaccessible regions such as rural areas. Computers are used in virtual classes, examinations, online tutoring, and even access to online libraries in education. Also, they bolster the usage of audio-visual aids in the field of education.
Again, the usage of computers manifests further in its importance to government institutions using computers to process data, maintain citizens’ databases, and provide support to a paperless environment. Also, the nation’s defense is bolstered by computers when it comes to missile technology and rocket launches. However, even though computers have been necessary, the dependence on these systems is almost petrifying if one could think of the adverse effects of computer usage. Our reliance on computers certainly should have its limits. For instance, a BBC report on the AI program showed the health hazards of the computer to humans. In this case, a young champion in the game of Go was beaten by a computer. The competitor, reduced to tears, said the computer was “…perfect, flawless, without any emotions” (Cellan-Jones, 2017). In another instance, in the UK, tears were also being shed over the computers. In this case, there was frustration among thousands of travelers by British Airways’ collapse of their IT systems, stranding hundreds of passengers. In these two cases, it is onerous to explain what happens in the “brains” of computers. By so saying, it means we are trusting our computers way too much for comfort.
In conclusion, it suffices to maintain that we should pay close attention to this notion. We must go back to the drawing board and ask ourselves what would happen to us if all computer-driven technologies fail. We should have an alternative plan to prevent us from descending into chaos. From the assertion above, computers have indeed been beneficial to humans. But we should not fully trust the machines to run every human activity.
