Abstract

My personal philosophy on education is that it is gained to be disseminated. A person gains education so that they can pass it on to others after and also as one utilizes the knowledge gained. Jesus Christ had a diverse group of disciples with different strengths and weaknesses and different personalities and backgrounds. Jesus taught them all equally despite knowing their personalities and commanded them to go and make disciples to the ends of the earth. As an educator, building on the strengths of students to help them self-actualize and make an impact on their world should be the goal of teaching. An educator should consider the diversity of the students, tailor the lessons accordingly, and ensure that the learning environment is conducive to the easy assimilation of new knowledge. Students, like the disciples, should be encouraged to learn in class and from environments around them and then use the said knowledge to change not only their lives but the lives of others as well.

Introduction

The society and economy of a country are developed by education, and hence, the milestone of the development of a nation is education. Education offers the population skills and knowledge and shapes people’s personalities. The success of an individual is impacted, to some significant extent, by a person’s education (Baum, Ma, & Payea, 2013). Education can also have a big impact on the opportunity that a person has to improve their quality of life. It is also viewed as the society’s foundation, which in turn brings political stability, social prosperity, and economic wealth. The social and economic status is dependent on the obtained education since education plays a major part in the capability of an individual to manage the quality of life. It can aid a person to avoid poverty, build a democratic society, and build harmony. Education is also capable of giving power to individuals to voice out (Baum, Ma, & Payea, 2013). Philosophy of Schools and Learning

Before going any further, the definition of education needs to be spelled out. Education has been defined as the process of learning facilitation or the acquisition of habits, beliefs, values, skills, and knowledge (Ball, 2017). The methods of education include direct research, discussion, storytelling, training, and teaching. Oftentimes, education takes place under educators’ guidance, though it is possible for learners to educate themselves. Additionally, education can take place in settings that are both formal and informal, and any experiences that have a formative impact on the way that a person acts, feels, and thinks may also be deemed educational (Ball, 2017).

Therefore, it may be understood that education is a way of inviting possibility and truth, and also encouraging and allowing time for discovery. According to Sikandar (2016), John Dewey, in 1916, asserted that education is a social ‘process of living and not a preparation for future living.’ The humanism learning theory focuses on the idea of self-actualization and is the theory that I embrace. This is because it allows for a student to be the best they can be. Hence, educators act with rather than act on people. The task of educators is to develop or bring out potential. Thus, education is hopeful and deliberate in that educators set out to make a reality the potential of people in the belief that there is always more in a person. Education is wise, respectful, and informed, and this is a process of inviting possibility and truth. Lastly, education is founded on the desire that every person may flourish and share in life. It is, therefore, an inclusive and cooperative activity that seeks to help people live the best life that they can possibly live.

Instructional Practice

The world today is not the same as it was decades ago. Today, adolescents are distracted more by the social world. Education appears to give them endless instructions on issues and areas that they do not find to be relevant. Although students are desperate to learn, they want to learn things in the social world, learn how this world works, and learn how they can maximize the rewards while reducing the social pain that they may experience (Lieberman 2013). Learning cultivation is an emotional and cognitive activity as well as a social activity. Thus, the long-range impact of education is to inform, to create change for self and others, and to transfer wisdom to others. In relation to adolescents, this has to be relevant to the social aspect of their lives. In a Christian worldview, we educate ourselves about God, His purpose for our individual lives, and how we can impact others to fulfill their purposes in life and equip them to do the same to others. The principle of God’s kingdom is all about gaining wisdom about God and telling others about it so that they can do the same.

As an educator, as part of instructing students, I would ensure that the environment is a comfortable and safe place to help them reach self-actualization. A conducive environment would allow for students to acquire information, knowledge, and skills.

Teacher-Learner Relationships

The learner is expected to feel relaxed enough to open up their minds to learn new things. A student in a conducive environment should focus solely on the learning process and not get distracted by other social factors that may hinder their full concentration. The teacher is tasked with encouraging students to focus on the education process rather than the eternal environmental factors that may be a barrier to acquiring education. The teacher should also be open and inviting so that whenever a student is faced with challenges, such a student can confide to the teacher, who in turn will take necessary action to resolve or minimize the impact of the said challenge.

Diversity

Jesus exemplified how a teacher can handle diversity when he had disciples with diverse personalities. Being God, He knew the strengths and weaknesses of each of His disciples, including Judas, who would eventually betray Him. The disciples’ diversity was no reason for discrimination, and instead, Jesus walked and taught each in equal measure. They all witnessed His healing and miracles, and he commanded them all to do the same and make disciples in every corner of the earth. As a Christian educator, I need to emulate Jesus and appreciate that students have diverse backgrounds, including social, cultural, economic, and racial. Additionally, students have different strengths and weaknesses, and thus, a teacher should capitalize on the strengths while working to improve on the weaknesses. The lesson design and instruction will be a reflection of each student’s strengths and weaknesses. The examples used in the lessons would be culturally appropriate to include the minority students while not excluding the other cultural groups in the process

Conclusion

In conclusion, the purpose of education is to better oneself in the present and in the future. The acquisition of knowledge should not remain in self, but a person should disperse the gained knowledge. The long-term impact of education, thus, is to better the self and to better others. An educator, while using the humanistic learning theory, should take the example of Christ and capitalize on the strengths of the students, work on the weaknesses, be aware of the diversity of the students, and, hence, plan lessons accordingly.
