The Decline of Zimbabwe

The southern African state of Zimbabwe was once a nation with a promising economic growth and development future. However, the country’s development was set back by a series of poor policies and practices as implemented by the first, and for over three decades, only the president of the independent state of Zimbabwe (Hill & Hult, 2019). Zimbabwe’s economic performance would have been better if the country had a different government system. Instead of a totalitarian government, Zimbabwe should have worked to develop a more democratic political system.

A totalitarian government is a dictatorial system that limits the political powers of the citizens and prohibits the opposing parties from having control over the state and its claims. In this type of government, one leader is likely to overpower the rest of the nation and have control over the private and public lives of the people in the nation (Driskell & Nelson, 2017). Robert Mugabe’s rule over Zimbabwe has been totalitarian in nature. He has implemented many policies, regardless of the lack of support from people in the country, which have slowly led to the country’s economic fall. If the government was democratic, the citizens and the opposing parties would have more power to control the actions of Mugabe. They could have stopped his poor decision-making before it was too late.

However, the economic outlook of the country is not hopeless. There are still some actions that could help to improve the performance of the country’s economy. For instance, the new leaders can overturn the policies that discourage investment, such as the 51% local ownership requirement. This will encourage foreign direct investment to increase the country’s foreign income and reduce the unemployment rate.
