Describe the intended purpose of the first session.

The following is a team development plan, specifically covering the details of session one. Session one is an introductory session of the team process. The purpose of this session is to give the members a chance to share their personal visions. Subsequently, the team will develop the group’s shared vision at the end of this first session. This session will strengthen the personal relationships between the team members and create a shared goal that will guide the team members in their collaborative efforts in other sessions.

Define change management and explain the three disciplines of Personal Mastery, Mental Models, and Shared Vision.

Change is inevitable in any sustainable business. Therefore, it is important for leaders to understand how to manage the change process. This requires an understanding of the concept of change management. Change management can be defined as a process where different tools and techniques are applied to manage a change process and achieve a given business outcome (Todnem, 2005). Change management enables successful transition when an organization is implementing something new. However, the process of change is not simple. There are certain components that, when included in the change management process, enhance the possibility of success. Senge (2006) defined five disciplines that promote effective change management. Three of these disciplines include personal mastery, mental models, and shared vision. The following is a definition of these disciplines.

  • Personal Mastery: This is the ability to accurately perceive reality and set a clear vision to achieve a certain goal. Personal mastery enables a person to have a clear understanding of the position that they are in and the goal that they want to achieve (Mehta, 2017). Personal mastery enables leaders to identify needs for change and guide others towards the achievement of the change.
  • Mental Models: These values and perceptions influence how people understand the world and their actions (Mehta, 2017). In change management, it is important to have the right mental models. For change to be achieved, the members of the change team and the organization, in general, must be willing to change the mental models that keep them in the old ways of operation.
  • Shared Vision: For change to occur, it is important for the employees to have a shared vision. A shared vision is a shared destination in the change process. It is important to ensure that the members of the team are working towards the same goals (Mehta, 2017). This can only be achieved if each team member is willing to compromise on their personal visions.

Explain the learning discipline you have selected, why you have selected it, and why it is important.

For this team development session, I selected the discipline of a shared vision. In any team that is made up of a diverse group of people, it is likely that each of the team members will have a slight or complete vision of what they want to achieve. Differences in vision can create conflict in the goals that the team members are working towards. Therefore, the first thing in a team is to ensure that there is a shared vision. A shared vision will create cohesion in the team and make it easier for the members to collaborate to achieve their shared vision. Therefore, the development of the shared vision will be the first activity in session one of the team development.

Explain the group exercise you have selected and how you will use the team development material.

The exercise for developing a shared vision is simply a team discussion. The team members will share information about their personal vision and their desired vision for the team. Each of the members will have a chance to share their vision, and they will also be required to listen to the ideas of others. The team will then have a discussion of what they collectively want to achieve. This will include considering the ideas of all people and making compromises to get to a consensus about what the team wants to achieve.

Describe the organization you have selected for your project.

The selected organization is Chevron. This is a multinational business organization in the energy sector. The organization has been selected because of familiarity since this is one of the companies I have had a chance to work for. The company is in need of significant change to improve employee satisfaction. Therefore, this team will focus on developing solutions for the organization.

Outline your schedule for session one of team development. Include the names and titles of the organization team members participating in the sessions, and the scheduled meeting dates and times. If you have not been able to solidify any part of your schedule, please give a report on your progress.

This part of the team development plan is yet to be finalized. The issue with the schedule development is that emails from some of the contacted members of the team are yet to be received. I need feedback from the team members to ensure that the schedule is appropriate for each member. This will ensure that each member is committed to the team and will attend the sessions as determined by the planned schedule.

After receiving feedback from your instructor you will conduct your session and prepare a report on the experience for submission in Unit 4. In your plan, you will indicate what you wish to achieve in your first session, the learning discipline you propose to apply with your group (Personal Mastery, Mental Models or Shared Vision), and the exercise you will use to promote capacity in your team with respect to your chosen discipline. By creating a plan for your group exercise, you will demonstrate your understanding of change management principles before you try to apply them.
