Speech Outline: Introduction and Conclusion

Speech Outline: Introduction and Conclusion

Suppose I was to deliver a speech to college students about how to stick to a budget. In that case, I would use an introduction most students can relate to. This introduction would use a startling, powerful, and personalized statistic that should resonate with my listeners to trigger their emotional appeal. Having an emotional appeal towards something has been shown to help people remember whatever caused that emotional reaction. In this case, if I can create an emotional reaction towards budgeting and its importance, then every time a student is tempted to overspend, they will remember my speech.

One statistic I would use would be that of student debt. An example of an opening is, “Did you know that in 2021, the student loan debt was approximately 1.75 trillion dollars, with 43% of Americans having unpaid student loans? More shockingly, a large percentage of these people are aged 35-49 (Miller et al., 2021). At this age, a person most likely has a family, a car, a mortgage, and other expenses like healthcare. As you can imagine, adding the student debt to all these expenses is stressful. Besides, the student loan is a huge amount to pay. Now imagine yourself ten or twenty years from now and determine how the student debt you are or will accumulate now will be paid off. One way to ensure you do not end up in debt is by budgeting expenses while in college to avoid ranking up a lot of student debt.” This introduction provides the perfect cautionary tale for students in college. The introduction is also personalized, eliciting a strong emotional reaction (Maier et al., 2017). This way, students will learn to spend their student loans on things they need and get a job if they want to spend money on other non-essential needs.

My conclusion technique would be to emphasize the importance of budgeting. I would do this by repeating the main points that I have explained in the body section of the speech. Most importantly, repetition of the main points helps the audience to remember them.
