Speech Analysis
Speeches are a significant part of the world today; they are given at gatherings as small as family meetings to as large as national levels during presidential elections. Many of an individual’s traits contribute to the success of the speech. This includes their appearance and speech while utilizing various styles to grasp the audience’s attention and understanding. Accordingly, one speech that I feel was particularly effective is “A More Perfect Union” by Barrack Obama in 2008.
“A More Perfect Union” speech by Barrack Obama was effective due to his style and language strategies. The main topic of the speech was presenting himself as the ideal presidential candidate; throughout the speech, he continued to emphasize and paint a picture of why he was the ideal presidential candidate. The core style that Former President Barack Obama used in his speech is rhetoric style. His rhetoric style is based on persuasive styles using fallacies such as appeal to emotions, pathos, and ethos (Catalano, 2011). The appeal to emotions is evident in the speech and is used multiple times. For instance, “I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together” appeals to people to work together for a better nation. The use of ethos is also apparent in “I’ve gone to some of the best schools in America,” where he shows his professional background. Finally, pathos is illustrated when he talks of his family background, appealing to the audience that relates to him. Do you need help with your assignment ? Contact us.
These language styles establish the purpose of the speech by portraying him as the best candidate for the presidency. Aside from using language styles, other strategies include a vision-based and hopeful speech that the audience can relate to. Consequently, I believe the speaker successfully achieved the speech’s purpose. Accordingly, style and word choice are essential in getting and maintaining the audience’s attention. Therefore, it is significant to incorporate these techniques in speeches. Hence, I will do this by writing speeches that address my audience in a captivating manner and maintaining poise while presenting the speech boldly and courageously to invoke the audience’s trust.
