Should Alternative Medicine Be the Go-To Medical Practice
Health concerns often drive people to their medicine cabinets: when a person cannot sleep, they go get sleeping pills. A different person in the same situation may choose to have some milk or hot chocolate as a remedy. The body reacts differently to different stimuli, be it emotions or ailments. Accordingly, medicine is a vital practice in ensuring the well-being of individuals, and people have numerous choices in healthcare. The choices include conventional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine. Conventional medicine involves medication, surgeries, and healthcare professionals such as doctors, while alternative medicine involves the use of therapies that train the body to heal itself (Chatterjee 1). Conventional medicine is the go-to medical practice currently, with many people seeing doctors and receiving pharmaceuticals as remedies. The preference for conventional medicine is questioned because it would be due to a lack of information or misinformation. Given the option to take medication or to train the body to heal itself, it is apparent that training the body sounds more effective. For instance, a person struggling with insomnia can perform specific practices that restore a healthy sleeping routine. As an alternative, a person may also decide to take medications or see a doctor. Conventional medicine provides for the treatment of symptoms, reducing efficacy as the source of a problem is not directly addressed in many cases. Also, individuals do not participate in health restoration as they follow a healthcare professional’s treatment plan, and it reduces safety and effectiveness as lives are lost in some cases. Consistently, people get to choose the healthcare they want, and between alternative and conventional medicine, alternative medicine should be the go-to medical practice because of individual personal participation in health restoration, its safety and effectiveness in practice, and its efficacy as a healthcare choice.
Alternative medicine should be the go-to medical practice because of individual personal participation in health restoration. Falling sick places people in situations that have them feeling powerless, with the ailment taking charge of almost every organ in their body. Feeling powerful enough to restore health involves participation in several ways, including meditations or medications. Other methods of participation include music and dance, all of which are used in alternative medicine therapies. Sheppard and Broughton stipulate, “Throughout history, music and dance have been used consistently as tools for healing and health” (1). Alternative medicine has long been practiced traditionally by various cultures, including Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. In these fields, the ailing individuals participate in holistic therapies such as meditation and body massage, all of which individuals must participate in to restore balance for well-being. Therefore, with alternative medicine, people participate through practices such as meditation to restore health.
Alternative medicine should be the go-to medical practice because of its safety and effectiveness in practice. Chatterjee writes, “CAM practices and products are usually free from harm because they are ‘natural” (1). CAM is short for complementary and alternative medicine practice, which is different from conventional medicine. It is evident that the safety and effectiveness of alternative medicine include safe practices, including meditation and products, as the aim for holistic health. For instance, music therapy, a practice in alternative medicine, is a safe treatment practice that does not place ailing people in harm’s way, but it is effective in yielding the desired results, inclusive of soothing organs that are distressed (Sheppard and Broughton 1). With conventional medicine, surgeries are the therapies for distressed organs that place patients in harm’s way, reducing their safety, and in some cases, effectiveness is questioned as the desired results are not met from procedures such as plastic surgeries. Subsequently, with alternative medicine, patient safety is maintained, and procedures are effective.
