Response-Introducing Facts and Numerical Data to Carson’s Book
Carson’s book is informative. However, she needed to introduce facts and numerical data to make it more persuasive. Therefore, if she were to rewrite the second chapter for a scientific audience, she would need more support from research to support her claims starting from page two. Also, from the middle of the chapter to the end, specifically, the section she explains how basic chemicals have been used to kill insects, rodents, weeds, and other organisms. This section needed more facts and numerical data to make it stronger and more convincing. If Carson had added information from research, her claims would have been more convincing. For example, she argues that “Since the mid-1940s over 200 basic chemicals have been created for use in killing insects, weeds, rodents, and other organisms described in the modern vernacular as ‘pests’; and they are sold under several thousand different brand names” (Carson 2). This claim could have been better if she had added some numerical and statistical data explaining and stating the 200 basic chemicals created to kill insects and other organisms.
The second claim, “The widespread use of DDT and other long-lasting poisons in so-called agricultural control programs” (Carson 5), also needed numerical backup. This claim needed more emphasis by adding numerical data to explain the long-lasting poisons and effects of using DDT. Carson would have highlighted numerical data comparing the use of DDT and the non-use of DDT to show the difference in percentage form. This would make it more persuasive. Also, the middle section of Carson’s work would benefit by including facts and numerical data. This section explores the use of chemicals and their poisoning effects. Therefore, she needed to add more facts and numerical data to explain and emphasize each point on the use of DDT chemicals and their poisonous effects. Carson could have cited several studies from scientific, environmental, pollution, health studies, and agricultural studies because the topic she was covering touches on almost every aspect of life, from the soil, chemicals, atmosphere, rocks, human beings, and organisms. Thus, citing the above studies would be advantageous.
