As teachers and students interact daily, misunderstandings occur due to pressures caused by their varied desires, feelings, and needs. In Chapter 8: Common Problems of Student Teachers, stress and anxiety are among the leading causes of problems between teachers and students. However, teachers and learners can use some communication tips to empower mutual understanding and coexist with each other. Therefore, analyzing communication tips is essential in understanding how they would help solve common student-teacher problems. Notably, Machado writes some tips that can help teachers and students develop lasting professional relationships free from disputes. Some of the tips I found interesting include:

Caring and Sharing

Caring for and sharing information is the first step toward solving conflicts between students and teachers. Caring starts with loving and accepting each other despite people’s differences in opinions. For example, the author advocates for teachers to give attention to students’ needs by giving them the freedom to make choices (Machado et al. 210). When teachers allow students to practice their communication skills, they make them feel appreciated and considered. Consequently, this will help reinforce rapport and build lasting relationships between teachers and students.

Authenticity

In authentic student-teacher communication, teachers create student-centered classrooms that engage students’ views and thoughts (Machado et al. 211). In such a situation, students and teachers are encouraged to share their feelings without putting each other down. Authentic communication leads to meaningful relationships because students and teachers learn to express their feelings skillfully. As such, both parties learn ways to embrace each other despite their shortcomings. Therefore, when teachers encourage students to share their thoughts, they feel loved and appreciated, which leads to lasting relationships.

Stating Common Goals

Another tip that could help solve a conflict between teachers and students is stating common goals (Machado et al. 212). Having shared goals allows students and teachers not to blame each other when issues arise. The book advocates the importance of calmly stating the problem and looking for ways to solve it. For example, using terms such as “I message” communicates the senders’ feelings without blaming others. Therefore, having common goals helps to see through the issues without condemning the person raising the issue.

Giving Positive Feedback

Giving feedback acts to communicate expectations to students. When teachers provide positive feedback to learners, they help them improve their performance and action as a way to bring them closer.
