Designing a Quantitative Study

When developing a quantitative study, seven important features must normally be considered. Firstly, the main research question must be clear and precise, defining the problem being studied and the hypothesis being tested. Second, the sample population should be specified in detail, including its features and size, to ensure that it is representative of the target population. Third, the data collection method should be clearly stated, including the instruments utilized and procedures used for collecting data, as well as a discussion of the instrument’s reliability and validity (Arends et al., 2022). Fourth, the study’s independent and dependent variables should be defined while taking into account confounding variables that may influence the outcomes. In addition, the data analysis procedure, such as the statistical tests that were or will be utilized to examine the data, should be specified. Additionally, the study should provide the data analysis results, including any notable findings. Finally, the conclusion should provide a summary of the study results and discussions and offer recommendations to future studies that might want to explore the same topic further.

Data Collection

The article by Edsberg et al. (2022) describes a quantitative study that used an observational cohort study design with cross-sectional data collection and retrospective data analysis. The study population consisted of about 296,000 patients who were hospitalized at 1800 acute care facilities across the U.S. and who took part in the IPUP survey (Edsberg et al., 2022). The data collection method utilized in this study was an IPUP survey. This is an observational, cross-sectional cohort database, which is often used to collect data for different studies. Clinical staff at hospitals were instructed to follow data collection methods and complete the data abstraction record correctly. The study evaluated all patients hospitalized within a predetermined twenty-four-hour period within a 2 to 3-day span. The survey teams judged compliance with prevention practices during the data collection process using documented and witnessed executions of every one of these prevention strategies (Edsberg et al., 2022). The obtained data was then retrospectively evaluated to assess the implementation of PI preventative strategies.
