Diversity Inclusion and Equity in the Modern Workplace

Diversity Inclusion and Equity in the Modern Workplace

Diversity, inclusion, and equity are common concepts in the modern workplace. Diversity in the workplace includes having employees from different national origins and backgrounds. It may be categorized into cultural, socioeconomic, and gender diversity. Cultural diversity includes individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Gender diversity includes individuals from different genders. Socioeconomic diversity includes individuals from different socioeconomic classes. Inclusion is the appreciation and recognition of people’s differences in the workplace and the use of skills and talents of employees from all backgrounds. Cultural diversity includes individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Diversity and inclusion focus on creating equity which includes providing all employees with equal and fair opportunities. Various researchers have reviewed the application of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. This report will discuss the themes in five peer-reviewed articles covering diversity, inclusion, and equity. The report will also include a brief discussion of areas of future research based on the information that is not adequately covered in the five articles.

Current Trends Paragraph

El-Deiry & Giaccone (2021) discuss the challenges in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The article’s main theme is the challenges employees in clinical oncology and research face in creating a work environment that embraces diversity, inclusion, and equity. The authors argue that implementing diversity, inclusion, and equity in clinical oncology and research is challenging because of differences in healthcare spending and inadequate access to cancer clinical trials for underrepresented minorities and non-white ethnic and racial groups. Subsequently,  Ganeshan & Vethirajan (2022) discuss employee diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. The main themes in the article are the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace and the challenges that organizations experience in creating equity in the workplace. The authors argue that although diversity, inclusion, and equity help organizations meet the demands of the changing workforce in modern workplaces, some organizations experience challenges in creating equity because of a lack of support from managers. To follow this, Krithi & Pai (2021) review how diversity and inclusion can be managed in an organization. The main themes in the article are the implications of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and how to create a diverse work environment. The authors argue that diversity and inclusion increase workforce productivity, but if not properly managed, it could lead to disasters related to attitude clashes, language problems, and differences in perception. The authors add that developing an effective diversity and inclusion program in the workplace requires considering workforce diversity’s primary and secondary dimensions. Primary dimensions include age, gender, race, abilities or disabilities, sexual orientation, and ethnic heritage. Secondary dimensions include appearance, education, religion, work experience, income, religion, family, language, political beliefs, organizational role, and personal habits. Furthermore, Newbury et al. (2022) discuss the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion in international businesses. The main themes in the article include challenges faced in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion and multi-level factors that impact diversity, equity, and inclusion. The authors argue that implementing diversity, inclusion, and equity in international businesses is challenging because of multi-level factors such as regional expectations, societal differences, and differences in values and beliefs. Lastly, Shore et al. (2018) discuss the characteristics of inclusive workplaces. The main theme in the article is the inclusion constructs that define inclusive workplaces. The authors argue that organizations are considered inclusive if they have inclusion practices such as promoting and recruiting people of color, women, and ethnic minorities and offering training on diversity management.

Future Research

Existing research has covered the advantages of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace and the challenges that organizations face in creating diverse and inclusive work environments. Current research has also reviewed the challenges experienced in creating equity in the workplace. However, there is limited research on the approaches that organizations can take to create diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. Therefore, future research should focus on how organizations can effectively create diverse work environments and maintain inclusion and equity.
