Since I learned that my communication skills are not that sharp, there are various ways through which I can improve them, especially during emergencies. One way to improve these skills is by practicing how to communicate clearly and concisely, irrespective of whether the communication is through verbal or non-verbal means (Barrat, 2019). Notably, this means that the information should be tailored to meet the target audience’s requirements. Another aspect that I have noticed is crucial to effective communication is empathy and active listening. Actively listening to what others say helps create rapport and fosters better collaboration. During group communications, it is important to ensure clear expectations and goals that each group member should observe. Notably, interagency collaboration can be hindered when different communication styles and differing opinions are present in the group. However, by considering the aspects of clear communication, empathy, and active listening, the gaps can be bridged and, as a result, achieve better cooperation.

If the team had planned the trip in real life, more effective communication could have been achieved by establishing a communication plan for the group. The communication plan could help ensure a clear chain of command with every group member understanding their roles effectively. Further, regular check-ins and updates on the group status can be applied to ensure that every group member is informed of happenings within the group. Lastly, the practiced skills can be relevant in future communities and professions in various ways. For instance, effective communication skills can be used to foster teamwork and collaboration in the future. Additionally, they can be used to improve relationships with colleagues while undertaking professional duties.
