Job loss is not uncommon. Many of the cases of job loss are usually not connected to the employees’ performance, but issues happening within the company (Pathfinder, nd). When one is working in a company where there is an impending job loss, the following are some of the signs to look for.
Mass Layoffs
When a company goes through mass layoffs, chances are that the company will be in serious financial trouble. Even when an employee has not been a part of the layoffs, yet, they need to be prepared for possible further layoffs if the company does not solve its issues.
Poor financial performance
Witnessing consistently poor financial reports from a company should be a sign of job loss. Businesses that go through financial issues tend to explore options for reducing costs. Downsizing the workforce is one of the first actions that most businesses will take when trying to reduce the costs of their operations.
Consistently poor company publicity
A company that persistently does things to put itself in the position of a poor public image can eventually end up in decline. Customers may stop supporting the business, leading to poor performance. If an employee notices this sign, they should be on the look-out for a possible decline.
Severe economic turmoil
Economic issues impact all businesses. When there is a severe economic decline, a lot of businesses downsize to survive. For instance, the 2008 economic depression caused many businesses to let go of their employees (Hout, Levanon & Cumberworth, 2011).
Possibility of a corporate merger or acquisition
When two businesses are merged, or one acquires another, many employees lose their jobs in the process of eliminating redundancy. If the operations of the merged company are then combined, some of the employees will not have jobs anymore.
Reduced mention of long-term plans
A company that sees a future with its employees will often discuss their long term plans. A sign that there is no future in the company is the inability of the executives to make plans for the employees’ future. For instance, a company may talk about a five-year plan with employees that it wants to keep for a while.
Reduced manager or supervisor interests
Managers and supervisors may have a sudden loss of interest in the affairs of the employees. This is a sign that something is happening in the company. An employee can see this as a sign that the business plans to let them go.
Company not rehiring vacant positions
Another sign of job loss is the company’s tendency to not rehire vacant positions. When a business needs its employees, it will replace them when they leave. In an organization that is going through issues, they force the available responsibilities on remaining employees. If such a company further declines, people may lose their jobs.
Reduced benefits
A drastic reduction in employee benefits is a sign that the company is going through financial trouble. For example, the company may eliminate some benefits like transportation, paid vacations, or company cars to reduce costs. The next step may be retrenching employees.
Increased unethical corporate behavior
Continuous unethical behavior in a company is also a bad sign for employees. Poor behaviors, especially from top executives, rapidly cause the decline of a company. Such executives also easily fire people from their jobs if they question the unethical behaviors.
