Nursing care remains the epitome of modern healthcare. Consequently, nurses owe it to their personal and professional mandate to provide high-quality care to their patients. Christian nurses base their caring roles on fundamental Christian values. They view caring as a means to walk with God and demonstrate their faith in Christ. My resolve to pursue nursing was informed, in part, by my commitment to care for all communities. Foremost, my Christian background imparted to me the value of human life and the role of humanity in promoting wellness. I recognize that it is God’s calling to provide care to those who need it and attach significance to my responsibility toward caring. My calling to care also informs the care I provide to my patients. This often begins with establishing sacred relationships with them and working to promote their emotional and spiritual healing.

A keen analysis of my spirituality and covenant with Christ reveals my strengths, which are a strong belief in the value of God and Christian teachings, compassion, appreciation, and recognition. As a strong believer, I subscribe to the Christian definition of health and wellness and perceive myself as a vessel called by God and designed to help others attain a state of tranquility and healing.  As a compassionate caregiver, I am always concerned with patients’ wellness and take proactive measures to work with them toward ensuring their healing. I have also learned to appreciate and recognize my patients. I understand that they, too, are humans, that their presentation to the clinic is a consequence of their suffering, and that I play a role in alleviating their problems.

Notwithstanding, advocacy for justice, tolerance, and patience are some of my weaknesses. Justice advocacy, patience, and tolerance are integral to wholistic nursing care. Christian nurses, in this respect, should actively advocate for justice in the clinical environment, remain tolerant of their patients, and practice patience even in challenging clinical environments. I, however, remain committed to improving these areas to bolster my ability to provide faith-based nursing care.

The sacred covenant model of caring remains a path toward nurses’ excellence in caring. The model is based on high nursing professional standards and faith and recognizes their significance in wholistic care. The model postulates that nursing is a pathway toward the daily call to remain just, demonstrate love and kindness, and walk humbly with God (Bangcola, 2021). Justice is the ability to provide nursing care to all patients without favoritism and prejudice. It allows nurses to not only bridge apparent gaps in healthcare inequality but also show nurses’ commitment to ensuring wellness for their patients. Love and kindness foster a strong patient-caregiver bond that promotes patient healing. Likewise, walking humbly with God means nurses maintain a personal relationship with him by abiding by his teaching and conforming to normative Christian values. Nursing approach to caring through the lens of the Sacred Covenant model highlights the significance of justice, nurse leadership, patient partnerships, and service, among others.

Nurses demonstrate justice by providing nursing care to all. In a dynamic healthcare landscape, where challenging and competing clinical complaints are apparent, Christian nurses can perpetuate justice by serving all patients equally without favoritism and prejudice. Nurses can also advocate for justice in contemporary care by exploiting their advocacy skills (Dos Santos et al., 2022). As nurse advocates, they can push for an equalization agenda and efforts that ensure all patients can access healthcare regardless of their background. As a Christian nurse, I ensure justice prevails within the care environment by treating my patients equally.

Nurse leadership also provides a pathway towards wholistic care and nursing excellence. Nurse leaders play a role in influencing other nurses to embrace positive changes in healthcare. In the context of faith, nurse leaders can work with other nurses to ensure their spiritual growth and maintain commitment to the normative standards of the nursing profession (Abou Zeid et al., 2022). To ensure spiritual growth, nurse leaders can organize prayer sessions within the nursing team and track the spiritual development of other nurses through occasional reflective sessions.  As a nurse leader, I remain committed to ensuring spiritual growth by fostering an environment that encourages bible study, prayer sessions, and faith-based reflective sessions. This way I will be able to ensure a stronger personal connection with God, as well as inspire other nurses to take proactive steps towards enhancing their spirituality.

The patient-nurse partnership is also integral to wholistic care and nursing excellence. In the sacred covenant model, patient-nurse partnerships are viewed as a foundation framework necessary for ensuring patient healing and nurse satisfaction with the services they are providing to their patients. I intend to foster effective relationships with my patients by providing patient-centered nursing care, listening to my patients, and respecting and dignifying them. This will help me develop a sense of satisfaction while promoting healing in my patients.

Service is equally important in ensuring wholistic health care. Nurses demonstrate service by maintaining responsibility and accountability in their nursing roles. I intend to integrate service into my normative roles by providing high-quality and effective nursing care to my patients. This way I will be able to promote healing to my clients.

Throughout the textbook, O’Brien compares how God established a sacred covenant with His people to nurses entering into sacred covenants with patients through their caring and service. Chapter 18 explores the specific aspects of this covenant in greater depth. This chapter also presents the history of spirituality in nurse caregiving, which has been described as an essential element of nursing practice, and spiritual concepts in nursing theories of caring.

Finally, Chapter 18 introduces you to the Sacred Covenant Model of Caring, a newly created “covenant-oriented” model of caring in the world of 21st-century health care, developed by the author. The focal concepts of this model include the “attributes of nursing,” which have been identified as a calling of service, a blessed trust, and a commitment to reverence.

  3. Read the article by Murphy and Walker, “Spirit-Guided Care: Christian Nursing for the Whole Person” or you can click here.
  4. Write a 2-3 page paper, in APA format, that addresses the following:    
    1. Explore your personal calling to care and service in relation to wholistic health care.
    2. Identify at least three personal spiritual strengths and at least three personal spiritual weaknesses and discuss how those relate to your nursing practice. Sections a and b combined are worth 30 points.
    3. Discuss the focal concepts of the Sacred Covenant Model of Caring and how you could, or currently do, apply this model to your area of nursing practice. Section c is worth 70 points. This needs to the main focus and volume of your writing. 
    4. You are required to have a minimum of two current and scholarly sources cited and referenced in this paper.  Your textbook may be considered one of the two sources used for this assignment. First-person writing is permissible in this assignment.
  5. Proofread your paper for grammar, spelling, and APA errors.
