Responding to Enrique Castellanos

Hello Enrique,

I acknowledge your contribution to the discussion of FNP 592: Common Illnesses across the Lifespan- Clinical Practicum. Your choice of disease to focus on is interesting. Your presentation is both educative and insightful.

Kidney disease is among the common health conditions that occur across the lifespan. Kidney stone disease is among the common illnesses that indiscriminately affect people both in developed and developing countries. Over the years, as you have noted, the incidence and prevalence of the condition have continued to increase with notable racial disparities, with non-Hispanic whites mostly affected with a rate of 10.3% as compared to Hispanics at 6.4% and Blacks and 4.3% (Crivelli et al., 2021). The diagnosis of kidney stones can range from an incidental asymptomatic case without cause for clinical concern to advanced cases with the potential for ureteral obstruction and eventual kidney failure (Thongprayoon et al., 2020). Therefore, the choice of treatment is personalized based on the nature of the kidney stones.

The current treatment methods are mostly invasive as the kidney stones need to be broken down and removed from the kidneys naturally or using needles and guidewire. Although kidney stone disease is treatable and manageable, the major concern is its high recurrence rate. It is estimated that up to 50% of urinary stones reoccur in most patients, with the main risk factor for reoccurrence being nutrition (Siener, 2021). This makes it important to focus more on preventing the development of the disease in the first place. This includes creating sufficient awareness of kidney stone disease and education approaches to overcoming major risk factors, including adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating behaviors, a healthy BMI, and regular check-ups.
