NSG 3007 Week 2 Discussion-Nursing Ethics

Describe an ethical situation you have witnessed or potentially could experience within your nursing practice.

There are many cases that I have experienced in my line of duty that require ethical consideration. The most recent case is of a couple who visited the health care facility where the woman was seven months pregnant, They told me a story that two weeks ago, they went for a scan and discovered that the fetus the woman was carrying had no hands or legs. According to their culture, if a woman gives birth to a disabled child, she is considered to have bad luck in the family and is neglected by all family members. Therefore, The couple came to seek advice on how to do an abortion and eliminate the features before the delivery date. This is an ethical case to me because, at this stage of pregnancy, it was very risky to perform an abortion. Also, abortion could only be conducted at the early stages of pregnancy if it caused risks to the mother or there was a high chance that the fetus could not survive. The couple insisted on having an abortion to the extent that I had to call my colleagues to help them understand why we could not conduct an abortion. It was unfortunate that I later learned that the couple committed suicide as no healthcare facility could allow abortion at that stage; yet, the couple had feared that if they gave birth to the child, the cultural men and women would chase them from the community. According to this case, there is a need for healthcare facilities to offer education to different cultures on factors that need to be eliminated that affect the health of the cultural members. Such cultural beliefs and norms might result in many deaths as people fear the cultural consequences they might get if they give birth to children with disabilities. Cultural leaders need to understand that many prominent people today were born with disabilities, but that did not hinder them from becoming successful (Honkavuo, 2021).

Compare two ethics concepts discussed in week two content.

The two main ethical concepts that apply to the case include Nonmaleficence and Justice. Nonmaleficence is the act of avoiding harming others  (Arras et al., 2017).   In this case study, the concept is applicable because failure to have an abortion was aimed at failing to cause harm to the mother and the fetus. This is very important because if abortion was conducted, it was risky to both the mother and the fetus, which could cause harm or death. The justice concept applies when we have to consider all parties involved in the scenario and make a decision that is fair to all. Failure to conduct abortion and explain to all parties the reasons as to why abortion could not be conducted is fair to all and shows fairness and justice.

Describe an ethical theory or principle that could guide you in this process.

Deontological ethics theory is the most applicable for this case study. The rationale for selecting this theory is that it is an ethical approach centered on rules and professional duties. According to the theory, everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. If abortion was conducted, it, therefore, means it is against the nursing code of conduct that guides regulations on when abortions should be considered and could have violated the dignity of the fetus (Neeraj Sachdev, 2020).

Topic 2

After reading both models of socialization, I prefer Benner’s. I agree with Benner that advancing from stage to stage occurs gradually as nurses gain more experience in patient care. (Black, 2017). We improve our critical thinking skills based on our patient’s understanding, learn to prioritize based on patient’s needs, and organize our day depending on our tasks list.

According to Benner’s model, based on my nursing experience of 15 months, I am an advanced beginner. Benner states that “their performance is marginally competent. They can base their actions on theory and principles but tend to experience difficulty establishing priorities, viewing many nursing actions equally important.” (Black, 2017) I started nursing on a step-down oncology unit; I was very nervous my first day. Over the last 15 months, I have become more competent, and my critical thinking skills have improved. I learn new things every day and am blessed to have a competent group of nurses to answer any questions I may have.
