While all nursing characteristics are important, I believe individual responsibility (accountability) is one of the most important. As Registered Nurses, we are accountable for the care we give our patients and their families daily. For the tasks performed daily and the outcome of those tasks. Individual accountability in nursing has become a hallmark of practice. According to the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, accountability is being answerable to someone for something one has done. (Black, 2017) Provision 4.4 of the Code states, “Nurses are accountable and responsible for the assignment or delegation of nursing activities” (ANA, 2015, p. 17). Furthermore, accountability is firmly rooted in the ethical principles of “fidelity (faithfulness), loyalty, veracity, beneficence, and respect for the dignity, worth, and self-determination of patients” (p. 15). Accountability plays a significant role in nursing and is essential to being a caring and compassionate nurse.

Nurses will likely experience substantial psychological issues during the pandemic that can lead to burnout because of the extensive and heavy patient care workload. In many nations, hospitals are fully loaded with patients, and we can see that healthcare professionals are exhausted from providing care. That is why it is important to take care of our healthcare professionals; they also need support from the government and nursing groups.

Nurses have adapted well in impossible circumstances in some cases. For example, nurses started moving IV drips and all other machines toward the doorways of patient rooms so they didn’t always have to walk in and out of patient areas. This technique, while simple, helped prevent the spread of Covid.
Another nursing intervention that was recently circulating in the media is what nurses called the “hand of God.” These are gloves filled with warm water and placed on the hands of the isolated patients like a sandwich method so that they would feel like someone is touching their hands. It helps ease the loneliness and sadness of the patients.
