These symptoms made them seek medical intervention severally; however, the doctors delayed the formulation of a diagnosis with allegations of Rory being a “typical boy”. Despite many dismissals, O’Grady continued to look for a solution to her son’s problem, and her determination yielded success when the son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease that causes childhood dementia called Sanfilippo Syndrome. This diagnosis was made when Rory was six when a urine test was done. Anna was also diagnosed with the same condition. Rory is now ten years old, while Anna is seven. Noteworthy, despite being diagnosed with the same condition, the symptoms are more pronounced in Rory than in Anna (Om, 2023).

Potential Factors

Sanfilippo Syndrome is a group of progressive and complex neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorders featured by dementia in childhood (Muschol et al., 2022). Factors inclusive of age, gender, culture, and genetics impact the subject in the news reported. For instance, age has been reported to influence the symptoms of the disease, where Rory’s symptoms are more pronounced at the age of ten than when he was six. Secondly, cultural factors may have influenced Rory’s delayed diagnosis because the doctors stated that they had not experienced such a rare condition. Thirdly, gender may also have influenced the manifestation of the disease. Anna has less pronounced symptoms than Rory, who is a male. Also, due to his gender, the doctors were biased and delayed the diagnosis, dismissing Rory as a typical boy. Lastly, genetic factors are influential in the case presented in the news. This is because the family did have another child diagnosed with the same condition.
