Negotiation- Pre-bargaining Phase
Bargaining is an important skill that is not taught in school. Each individual is compelled to learn the skill later in life. The pre-bargaining phase consists of various steps. There are eight steps in this phase. The process of preparing for bargaining involves collecting relevant information, identifying the leverage points, analyzing the current issues, creating or establishing a rapport, identifying objectives and expectations, familiarizing oneself with the type of negotiation, creating a budget, and planning the entire negotiation (FindLaw, 2018). Based on the steps highlighted within the article, it is clear that the individual preparing for a negotiation must be proactive. Failure to demonstrate proactivity is likely to lead to unsuccessful negotiations that do not achieve the intended goals. I need to improve my ability to establish rapport. The process of creating a friendly and amicable atmosphere with strangers is challenging yet easy. I need to be able to analyze the cooperativeness of the other party to avoid going into negotiations that may not yield the desired fruit. Due to my fear, I will most likely hire a mediator even when none is needed for the negotiation, which expands the budget.
Communication is critical in a negotiation because it happens in different ways, verbally or non-verbally. The parties’ ability to communicate clearly determines the achievement of the goals. Individuals who fail at communication have a hard time expressing their needs, which can lead to frustration. The lines and modes of communication determine whether an individual can successfully create rapport with those who are involved. The communication process entails highlighting the facts and considering other issues as well that may lead to the solution (FindLaw, 2018). Thus, it is important to establish clear lines of communication for successful negotiation.
