Navigating Regulatory Landscapes- Airbnb’s Strategy for Ethical Consumer Treatment and Global Expansion

Navigating Regulatory Landscapes- Airbnb’s Strategy for Ethical Consumer Treatment and Global Expansion

Airbnb could comply with local, state, and international regulations by lobbying policymakers and local governments and establishing collaborative mutually-beneficial agreements through memoranda of understanding. Adopting a collaborative approach with regulatory authorities, including locally, across states, would be a strategic approach to ensure that Airbnb is regulated and remains competitive (von Briel & Dolnicar, 2021). Additionally, renegotiating memoranda annually would ensure that Airbnb and regulatory authorities manage emerging challenges collectively (von Briel & Dolnicar, 2021).

There are several ways in which Airbnb could ensure the ethical treatment of consumers. First, safeguarding Airbnb consumers’ privacy by protecting personal identifying data against unauthorized access and usage by other information consumers is significant in ensuring consumers’ ethical treatment. Airbnb should maintain control over the use and disclosure of its consumers’ personal information to ensure they are ethically treated (Nadeem et al., 2021). Second, Airbnb can ensure its consumers are ethically treated by eliminating uncertainties regarding the Airbnb platform’s security lapses that could result in the loss of financial, personal, and transaction-based consumer information. According to Nadeem et al. (2021), the security of shared economy platforms such as Airbnb, including protection from unwanted access and use of personal information and the safety of transactions, is essential in ensuring the ethical treatment of online consumers.

In my opinion, Airbnb should not have a separate strategy to get regulated and ensure the ethical treatment of consumers for the international component of its business model. On the contrary, it should customize the collaborative approach to establish memoranda of understanding in international markets to ensure it complies with regulatory requirements in different parts of the world. Customizing the collaborative approach would be critical, considering that different markets have different regulation requirements. Additionally, adopting a standardized approach to ensuring the ethical treatment of consumers will be crucial in ensuring Airbnb consumers are treated ethically and globally.
