Managing Hot Ethical Issues
What hot ethical issue is emerging in the business world today?
Ethics is a great part of all businesses. Successful businesses always strive to create a positive ethical environment. The issues they must face to create this environment are always changing. One hot issue in business ethics today is balancing employee autonomy on social media and free speech. A positive ethical environment is one that allows all people to be able to express themselves freely and to be honest about issues that affect them. However, businesses today find it hard to balance giving their employees the right to free speech and controlling what they post about the company.
Which approach to analyzing ethical issues do you think would provide the soundest analysis of this issue, considering the different approaches your course text presents?
The best way to solve this ethical issue is to apply the duty-based approach by Immanuel Kant. Kantian ethics proposes that people think about the duty one has to fulfill a particular action rather than the consequence of the action. One must make sure that they are doing what is required of them regardless of the effect they will achieve from their actions (Ferrell & Fraedrich, 2015). In this case, employees need to protect the images of the companies that they work for by controlling the kind of information they post on social media.
How would you describe the ethical issue you selected for the project? Explain why the approach you chose to analyze this issue is ideal.
The ethical thing for businesses is to apply regulations that control the type of information they share because it is the organization’s duty to protect its image. The other option would be the utilitarian approach that focuses on the consequences of an action. The consequence of allowing employees to post anything is giving them their freedom of speech. This may seem like the right choice when using the utilitarian approach, but the effect of the choice would be the tarnishing of the organization’s image. Therefore, the duty-based method is a better option.
