Desdemona and Emilia have very different attitudes towards marriage and love. Paying close attention to their discussion in Act 4, Scene 3, and the play as a whole, they discuss why they each have such different ideas. What influences their attitudes?

Controversies concerning love and marriage have been a topic in societies over time. The conversation between Desdemona and Emilia in Act 4, Scene 3 presents two differing views and attitudes on love and marriage. Desdemona’s attitude towards marriage and love portrays hope for love, fidelity, and loyalty in a relationship, accompanied by dejection. In lines 15-17, Desdemona states, “We must not now displease him,” illustrating women’s submission to their husbands. Additionally, her perspective of love is illustrated in line 18, “my love doth so approve him,” and the willow song that celebrates love and heartbreak, as is the case in many relationships, including Barbary, showcasing her despair and the source of her attitude.

In contrast, Emilia’s attitude towards marriage and love portrays realism and feminism. Realism is elaborated with her approach to infidelity and marriage where she says, “Marry, I would not do such a thing for a joint ring” (line 71) and “But I do think it is their husbands’ faults If wives do fall” (Line 85-86). She argues that women who step out on their husbands do not have themselves to blame but their husbands, showing her feminist attitude and realism, which is the source of her attitude. Their attitudes may be framed by their worldview based on social class, from a lady and her maid, who were exposed to different circumstances.
