Global Leaders

Global Leaders

Write a two- to three-paragraph essay describing your background. Include any cultural experience from living in another country or working for a business with an international component. For example, do you speak any other languages? Do you live in an area or work for a company where there is ethnic diversity?

I am a Caucasian woman in my mid-’50s. As a middle-aged woman, I have had many local and international experiences. I have lived in the United States most of my life but also spent considerable time in Europe. I am fluent in English and Spanish; my language and geographical diversity have helped me interact with different cultures. This has helped me to improve my diversity communication in different settings. I have communicated in entirely different ways about similar things with different people. My cultural experience has also been enhanced by my work in several companies with an international component. I was an employee at Enron when the company still existed, and I have also worked for Chevron and Texaco. In these companies, I encountered people with very diverse characteristics. It helped me see how minor demographic differences can cause significant dissimilarities in people’s thoughts or actions.

Identify two or three attributes that successful global managers must possess. You will review these attributes at the end of the course to see if—and how—they have changed.

There are some attributes that a person must possess to be a global leader. First, a global leader must have deep self-awareness. Due to the differences in cultures, a leader needs to know their characteristics and how they affect the people they work with (Mendenhall et al., 2017). This helps them to know which personal attributes to show or suppress when working with people from different backgrounds. Another essential attribute of a global leader is a strong desire to learn. There is always something new to learn whenever one is exposed to a different culture (Mendenhall et al., 2017). Global leaders are always open to learning new things to enhance their global mindset.
