DEFINITION | CHARACTERISTICS |
A piece of literature where words are arranged in separate lines, usually ending in a rhyme to evoke a specific emotional response. Words are selected based on their sound and the suggested ideas and images. | Descriptive imagery– The poet describes what they see, sense, or hear and creates a picture that a listener or reader can see in their mind (Ryan, 2022).
Figures of speech are described in non-traditional or non-literal ways. The main figures of speech in poetry include hyperboles and metaphors (Ryan, 2022). Sound and tone- Different tones and sounds are used throughout the poem to evoke specific emotions. A poet may use alliteration to give the poem a sharp or soft sound based on the selected theme (Ryan, 2022). ·Meter-Poems have a meter representing the pattern or rhythm of speech with which a reader reads it (Ryan, 2022). · Format and punctuation-Poems are arranged in stanzas and breaks to create a specific rhythm (Ryan, 2022). |

Lyric poetry- uses emotional and song-like words to describe an object, moment, person, or feeling. Lyric poetry includes sonnets, a fourteen-line descriptive poem with a specific rhythm and elegy, and a reflective poem honoring the dead.
Narrative poetry- A poem that narrates a specific story. The main types of narrative poetry include an allegory, a poem that uses an extended metaphor to communicate a message, and a ballad, a poem that tells a story in the rhyme pattern of a song. Dramatic poetry- tells a story in either monologue or soliloquy format. A monologue is a speech given to the audience by one character, and a soliloquy is a speech given by a character to themself. |
Novels: A piece of literature presented as a written fictional story involving characters who interact to influence the conduct and experiences of one another.
Myths– A traditional story explaining a specific group of people’s cultural beliefs, history, or practice. Legends narrative narrating past human actions. |
