Finding Harmony- Techniques for Effective Stress Management

Finding Harmony- Techniques for Effective Stress Management

The current COVID-19 pandemic made my professional life stressful. After the virus began spreading in different parts of the country, many companies started laying off their employees to reduce operating costs. I was among the retained employees who were required to complete more tasks, which forced us to work long hours. The most important stress-relieving action I engaged in to relieve that stress was jogging in the morning. I felt that jogging in the morning helped me clear my head, and I was ready to deal with the pressure at the workplace without getting frustrated. I reflected on my progress in dealing with stress after I started my jogging sessions and realized that stress relief is a process that requires discipline and dedication. If I was not dedicated to my routine and disciplined to ensure that I never missed my jogging sessions every day, I would not have managed to relieve my stress regularly and would have probably considered quitting my job. I also learned that jogging is a useful stress relief strategy because it helps in boosting a person’s mood and reducing depression and anxiety. I, however, realized that the effectiveness of jogging as a stress relief strategy requires frequency. Although I have been doing well jogging alone, I am considering improving my jogging routine by joining a group of neighbors who usually jog together around the same time I do. I think that jogging in a group will make it fun and encourage me to maintain the routine because I will feel motivated to show up for the sessions on time so that I am not left behind. I also intend to increase the distance I go jogging to spend more time clearing my head.

Question

Managing Stress

This discussion is intended to help you consider how you might balance and manage stress.

The negative effects of stress on an individual’s health have made dealing with stress a major concern of many organizations. Research by Kumar and Jain states, “Work-related stress can have a negative impact on an employee’s job performance, physical and psychological well-being, musculoskeletal functions and immune system ” (2012). It is important to understand what stress consists of and plan for dealing with stress on a day-by-day basis. Consider the last time you felt your work was spiraling out of control. What workplace complexities became evident to you? What made you feel the work was out of control? Is your job insecure? Were deadlines pressing down on you? Were you working too many hours to get adequate rest? Did the environment lack resources such as labor to complete the work? Were processes soft and pliable rather than structured? Were you overloaded with personal and professional responsibilities?

Spend some time thinking about these issues before you compose your post.

Review the articles in this week’s study. For this discussion and from your personal experience, share an example of a time you felt your professional life was stressful. Then share what you consider to be the most important stress-relieving action you engaged in to relieve that stress. Elaborate and explain what you have learned about that process and the usefulness of the stress relief strategies you chose. You might talk about whether your process was successful, how much time it took, whether it was linear or circular, whether you enjoyed it, and even how you felt after invoking the process. You might also include ideas for improving your process, discuss the strategies you would not use again, or consider the idea of trying out a new strategy or two.

The purpose of this post is to help you reflect on the choices you make while you are attempting to normalize your work environment so that you can choose to develop habits that are most beneficial for you. Use clear descriptive words to describe your stress-relief strategy.
