Film Analysis- Group Behavior in the Workplace

Film Analysis- Group Behavior in the Workplace

Group behavior occurs when people behave in the same way because others within the same group are also acting similarly. Hence, the movie that was chosen to analyze group behavior within the workplace is Clerks, released in 1994. The movie tells a story about workers in a grocery store who are bored because of their daily routine at the workplace (Smith, 1994). Dante is forced to go to work to cover for his colleague, who is supposed to be working during the morning shift. It also happens that their boss, who was supposed to take over the afternoon shift, has neglected work and instead gone on vacation. Therefore, Dante and Randal find all the reasons for leaving the workplace. Need help with your assignment ? Reach out to us. We offer excellent services.

The scene that best explains group behavior in the organization is when Dante and Randal leave their workplace and go out to have fun. This scene is best connected with the scene where these workers are also bored at the workplace, and since the daily routine increases their boredom, they choose to engage in discussions on other matters (Smith, 1994). They also decide to leave work because their boss is not in, and Randal, who was also to be at work, has neglected his shift. This part of the movie best explains group behavior because it shows how one person’s behavior can influence others (Cracco et al., 2022). The boss’s behavior towards his store affects his employees’ behavior in a similar way.

According to Gençer (2019), group behavior is manifested when the feelings, behaviors, and ideologies of others influence people. This idea is also supported by the social comparison theory, which holds that people value themselves based on how they compare themselves. This theory also agrees with social impact theory’s ideas that people can be targets of social influence (Gençer, 2019). In this movie, these workers compared themselves to their boss and saw that if their boss could neglect his work to go for a holiday, then they were also worth taking a rest from the boring workplace. They also decided to leave the workplace because their boss’ behavior showed that he did not take his business seriously, influencing them to give little value to the company.
