Facility Layout Sawhill Athletic Club

Facility Layout Sawhill Athletic Club

Identify problems with the current facility layout, using load-distance approach.

To develop an id score for the current layout, we first identify the number of trips and the distance traveled between the various departments.

The number of trips between the departments is already provided, whereas the distance traveled can be evaluated by tracing the path followed when accessing a particular department from another department.

The two values, i.e., the number of trips between departments and the distance between departments, are then multiplied to find the load distance for all the trips along a particular route.

The summation of the load distances for all the trips gives the id score for a particular layout.

id score=∑▒〖l_ij d_ij 〗

The id score can be calculated using a spreadsheet as follows:

Block Layout for Sawhill Athletic Club (A)
Current Layout
Lobby A Racquetball Courts B
Exercise & Weights Room E Food Court C Pro Shop D
Shower/Locker Room G Child Care Facility F
      Current Layout
Departments Number of trips Distance Load-Distance
A B 15 1 15
A C 34 2 68
A D 32 3 96

Discusses an improved facility layout, using a trial and error approach.

To design a better and more efficient layout, identify the departments with the highest number of trips between them, then redesign the layout by bringing the identified departments into close proximity to each other to minimize the load distance.

The following departments have the highest number of trips between them and should be in close proximity in the new layout.

  1. A and F. These two have 54 trips between them.
  2. A and G. These two have 76 trips between them.
  3. B and G. These two have 72 trips between them.
  4. C and F. These two have 47 trips between them.
  5. E and G. These two have 74 trips between them.
  6. F and G. These two have 57 trips between them.

The proposed layout to lower the id score will be as follows.

Proposed Layout
Lobby A Racquetball Courts B
Exercise & Weights Room E Shower/Locker Room G Pro Shop D
Child Care Facility F Food Court C

The reduced id score for the proposed layout will be as follows.

Identify strategies and recommendations for an open environment approach.

To create an open environment in an athletic facility like Sawhill, I would employ the following strategies:

  1. I would use glass partitions between public areas like the pro shop and the exercise & weights room. These partitions would prevent members in these areas from feeling isolated and serve as a display for the pro shop.
  2. I would design the less frequented areas, like the racquetball court, to be more of an outdoor facility to eliminate the closed-in feeling in such areas.
  3. I would also place the less frequented areas next to more frequented areas with glass partitions between them to eliminate the feeling of loneliness and encourage members to explore these less explored areas.
