Evidence-Based Practice Project – Self-Evaluation
The Evidence-Based Practice Project assignment gave me insights into the expanded role of nurses in neonatal care. The topic “Skin-to-Skin for Newborns” was selected due to the dynamicity of the contemporary healthcare systems and the ever-present threats that child and maternal mortality presents to overall societal wellness. According to WHO reports, many children still die during the birthing process and immediately after birth (WHO, 2023). Likewise, maternal deaths are still being recorded even in the wake of technological advances in healthcare.
If I had another opportunity to redo the assignment, I would focus more on the existing policies and guidelines on skin-to-skin contact (SSC) care. Robust research exists concerning the effectiveness of SSC in improving the health and clinical outcomes of newborns. Previously thought to be effective only for preterm and low birth weight babies, SSC is effective even for full-term babies, warranting its integration into the standard handling of newborns (Bigelow & Power, 2020). I would, therefore, be interested in the level of adoption of SSC across clinical settings.
Evaluation reports reveal a congruence in the need to standardize SSC in newborn care. Many opine that the growing evidence on the significance of SSC in newborn health supports its inclusion as standard care for all newborns.
Notably, I am an excellent presenter. During my presentation, I drew the audience into the presentation. I could also leverage my communication skills to gauge my audience’s participation and get instant feedback. However, one of my weaknesses was feeling nervous. I was unusually nervous during the initial stages of the presentation but managed to ease off as the presentation progressed. Moving forward, I intend to bolster my ability to engage the audience and maintain contact with them throughout the presentation.

2. Review and critically evaluate research literature located on NTC library search site or other valid creditable research websites (i.e. CDC, MDH, etc.).
4. Compile & analyze project information demonstrating how evidence-based practice literature informs best practice.
- Present findings from project to group of peers during post-clinical conference via PowerPoint presentation
- Accurately evaluate self as a presenter.
