Essential Planning for Successful Facilities

Essential Planning for Successful Facilities

The first step in the planning of a stadium is internal and external constituent analysis. Internal constituents are the internal stakeholders of a stadium, including spectators and players. On the other hand, external constituents include the facility stakeholders from the outside, such as government officials and donors (Fried & Kastel, 2021). The constituent analysis is important because it helps determine the needs of the internal stakeholders and gain support from external stakeholders.

The community needs to be involved if public funds are used in the project. Public involvement involves gathering input from community members regarding what will be included in the facility. Therefore, planned meetings to gain community support should be inclusive to attract people’s support (Von Gerkan, 2013). Another important issue when dealing with the community is to avoid posturing. Some community members may present strong opposition to the construction of a stadium, but facility planners should not burn bridges while convincing them.

Another important step is to create a planning committee to help with the planning process. The primary goal when creating a planning committee is to ensure effective planning. Planning committee members should possess high-level leadership skills because they will deal with many people (Fried & Kastel, 2021). A planning committee is responsible for, among others, determining the project’s timeline. Most importantly, the committee should foster compromise, which will be key in implementing various activities throughout the project cycle.

The planning aspect for this new stadium that differed from other experiences I have previously encountered is the inclusion of a needs assessment. A needs assessment examines the economic and societal value a new facility brings. The needs assessment was used to estimate future facility demand to see whether the stadium would break even.
