Effective and Essential Training Methods
The key role of the lecture/discussion training method as it applies to today’s virtual era is to engage everyone involved in the training in selecting a training method that meets their learning needs and promotes communication among coworkers during the training. Another key role is to promote multimodal learning, which is appropriate in today’s virtual era. It includes interactive learning that accommodates different spaces, meanings, teaching strategies, and processes. The current virtual era is characterized by the extensive use of technology to promote learning using audio files, graphics, and various virtual reality design elements and features. For instance, in virtual learning, learners are required to explain their views using PowerPoint presentations and audio recordings, thus promoting multimodal teaching and learning. Philippe et al. (2020) identify multimodal teaching as a rising discussion, including system design-based paradigms with reflective, situated, and embodied praxis in emotional, temporal, and spatial virtual learning environments.
One of the benefits that students can derive from the addition of audiovisual enhancements to traditional training methods is being more engaged in learning, thus preventing boredom. When teachers use audiovisual elements, students interpret different audiovisual elements and sometimes engage in tasks requiring them to create audiovisual content, such as recorded PowerPoint presentations. This keeps students actively engaged in learning and motivates them to be more creative hence making learning enjoyable. The second benefit is increasing retention of what students learn (Shabiralyani et al., 2015). Audiovisual enhancements enhance content retention because they make it easier for students to remember what they learn. Content retention is also enhanced because students can visualize what they learn. The third benefit is that it increases flexibility in learning because students can study independently as long as they have access to the audiovisual enhancements set aside for the course.
