This reflection is about the Early Childhood Language and Literacy course taught by Dr. Deana Raulch. This was the most enjoyable and educative course among the courses I took this semester. The early childhood language and literacy course was my favorite and the most enjoyable because it made my teaching career much more practical and engaging than I expected. Most importantly, I appreciate my lecturer, Dr. Raulch, for making classes fun and great so that nobody could afford to miss any of the classes. Dr. Baulch was a nice lecturer and gave great feedback on assignments, making the work easy.

When we began this course, I was interested in learning a lot because I am passionate about teaching young learners. I have always yearned to be an effective early childhood educator. In fact, through this course and Dr. Raulch’s practical observation teaching techniques, I learned so much about teaching young learners. First, when we went for the first observation in pre-school, I realized that a solid foundation in oral language development in the early years before a child attends school is vital. Notably, it promotes success in writing and reading in the future (Bear et al. 128). Therefore, young learners with rich literacy and language experiences are more likely to be good readers in the future.

Apart from the well-explained lesson concepts, good and encouraging comments on assignments. I loved Dr. Raulch’s strategy of observing a mentor teacher or any teacher from a school of choice. The privilege of observing my mentor teacher was fun and motivating. During these observations, I learned that teaching is more of continuous learning. This is because while observing, I realized that after every observation, I learned and acquired vital skills or ideas that I could use to teach my class. Most importantly, the observation helped me reflect upon my instruction and experiment with some of the strategies I learned in my class. Also, during these observations, I had the chance to assist and interact with learners, which helped me learn so much about young students. In addition, I learned that effective planning and classroom management is the key to successful teaching in early childhood education.

Generally, I learned several teaching strategies, approaches, and classroom management strategies, especially for dealing with/controlling misconduct in class. The reflection and observation assignments challenged and encouraged me, but essentially, they helped mold me into the perfect early childhood educator I desire to be. I learned several traits of a good teacher, like patience, determination, wisdom, good planning, neatness, and enthusiasm. I appreciate and acknowledge Dr. Raulch for such an engaging and practical course that will positively impact my teaching career today and in the future.
