Discussion – The Ketogenic Diet

Discussion – The Ketogenic Diet

The rise in obese and overweight persons has exacerbated the global obesity and overweight crisis. Consequently, diet change and increased physical activity are some of the solutions recommended to prevent and reduce obesity and overweight cases, thus contributing to weight loss. Correspondingly, several diets have been promoted to aid in weight loss, including the paleo diet, vegetarian diet, and ketogenic diet. These diets vary from one another, and some may have adverse effects on an individual’s body. This discussion is an analysis of the ketogenic (keto) diet, including its pros and cons.

A ketogenic diet is a diet that involves a reduction in carbohydrate intake while increasing the intake of fats and proteins (Gibson et al., 2014). The carbohydrate intake is reduced to around fifty grams, and consequently, the liver produces ketones in response to a change from glucose to fatty acids as the source of energy (Tuck & Staudacher, 2019). This change affects the body, causing various effects, and subsequently, it is used as a therapy for refractory epilepsy. In addition, the ketogenic diet suppresses appetite through the low energy intake and the increase of ketones in the body, reducing individuals’ appetite (Tuck & Staudacher, 2019). Furthermore, ketones influence the body pathways that monitor the energetic state of cells and the body by maintaining the homeostasis of cells in the body (Gibson et al., 2014). Therefore, the ketogenic diet is a healthy diet that can be implemented since it is also recommended for some patients.

The ketogenic diet poses both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include weight loss from reduced hunger and appetite and reduced epileptic seizures in patients with refractory epilepsy (Tuck & Staudacher, 2019). In contrast, disadvantages include a diet low in nutrient uptake, constipation, vomiting, and gastrointestinal diseases in patients with gastrointestinal conditions (Tuck & Staudacher, 2019). In these cases, the cons of the diet can be controlled through the fluid intake. In conclusion, diet change aids in weight loss. The type of diet chosen may have various adverse side effects, but the keto diet is a healthy diet that poses more pros than cons.
