Discussion – Personal Vision

Personal vision: To be a successful advanced professional and a great leader to my team, family, and community members.

My Experience completing this Exercise

Developing a personal vision seems like an easy exercise, but when it comes to actually completing the exercise, it becomes just slightly challenging. The personal vision is very important in achieving success as a leader. The vision creates a sense of direction that guides a leader in everything that they do (Senge, 2014). However, there are many things that one person could possibly want to achieve. Putting those things into one statement is hard. However, I had to choose my professionalism and leadership because I believe that achieving great professional success and enhancing my leadership skills will set me up for success in many other areas of life. If I could have that vision now, I would take it, and this is how I know this is something I would like to work towards.

As a leader of a team, it would be important for the people that I lead to understand my personal vision. The personal vision provides a framework for most decision-making in a team and creates a framework for moving forward as a team. Therefore, it is important for the subordinates to understand the direction that the leader is likely to lead them. In a transformational leadership setting, the subordinates have to understand the vision and be willing to be a part of that vision (Stavros & Seiling, 2016). It is valuable to have a conversation as a team about personal visions so as to understand the similarities and differences between the directions that each team member wants to take. This then creates an avenue for the team to discuss their differences and find common ground regarding what they want to achieve as a team.
