Discussion – Check-In

Discussion – Check-In

Indeed, a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. I feel like one does when running a race and can see the finish line but is yet to get there. Marathoners say that the last few miles are the toughest and need the greatest willpower to complete. Fear, doubt, and uncertainty about what lies ahead after completing the MBA journey often plague me. I would ideally like to advance my career after getting my degree and also grow on a professional and personal level, but at times, thoughts cross my mind about whether it will be so. As a Christian, I know I am to take all things in stride, knowing that the author of my life has it all figured out. However, my humanistic side tends to look at figures, forecasts, and negative perspectives when landing my ideal job.

Balancing school and home/work life has also been a major challenge. Although I expected it to be a hectic balance, I honestly did not imagine it would take as much of a toll as it has. However, I find rest knowing that He who keeps watching over me neither sleeps nor slumbers (Psalms 121:4), and His joy is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I turn to my joy-giver, and He renews my strength like an Eagle’s (Isaiah 40:31).

Some topics were a bit of a challenge to grasp, and I had to seek help from my peers.  Accounting, in particular, was a somewhat difficult unit and I admit that initially, I developed a fear but toward the end of the final sessions, I was a little more confident than I was at the commencement of the subject.

Question

Check-In is an organizational system (OS) approach, a socio-technical tool used in some organizations for creating an intentional space for strategic discourse, knowledge sharing and authentic, honest, and open conversations around professional, personal and spiritual issues. I would like each of you to check in periodically, about once each session, and let us know how you are doing. You can discuss any relevant issue(s) you are working on strategically or struggling with regarding these assignments. Share your ideas and critical issues here for feedback from your professor and peers.

Discussion - Check-In

Discussion – Check-In

Since we are not meeting face-to-face in a traditional classroom setting, we will need to check in using this discussion thread so we can achieve a more collaborative experience virtually. Here’s how the system is designed to work:

  1. Get the whole system in the room (even if it’s a virtual room like this one), and share personal and professional, authentic, genuine, open, and honest issues. We do this because we must transition from home to work, from work to master’s degree work and then home again. Transitions are difficult because they require us to let go of something and adopt a new understanding and way of knowing. (Your MBA journey is a transformational experience).
  2. Get critical issues “off to the side” and neutralize (Use this discussion space as a sort of blackboard to post your issues for general discussion).
  3. Prioritize critical issues – Consider the importance of each issue or discussion and its relevance to your stated vision, values and goals (follow the decision point process).
  4. Establish Action Opportunities (AO’s) and do what’s do-able.
  5. Be task specific – focus on your areas of expertise and responsibility (consider, what areas are you a subject matter expert, (SME) in?).
  6. Revise the action plan – how we know what we know and do what we do (how we collaborate and do business here).
  7. Accountability – apply metrics to measure ROI – Increases profitability/productivity / added value / competitive advantage (Learn and grow).
