Discussion-Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin was a well-known biologist who traveled around the world for five years. He took time to analyze and understand species’ evolution and behavior along with their inherited physical traits and collected samples. After his research, he settled back in England and wrote his book “On the Origin of Species,” which he later published in 1859 (Balady and Gary). Darwin proposed that different species can change over time. New species evolve from pre-existing species, all with a common ancestor. An example is how the Galápagos finch species resembled each other as they shared a common ancestor.
The fifth edition of the book “On the Origin of Species” was published in 1869, when the term “Survival of the Fittest” became famous. Survival of the Fittest suggested that organisms that best adjusted to their environment are the ones that mostly succeeded in surviving as well as reproducing. The survival of the fittest has also existed in human life and is mostly related to the term “eat or be eaten.” Humans experience it in all their day-to-day lives and different environments they come across, both socially and economically. I believe it is beneficial for human beings to compete for advantages and survival because the resources available are always limited. Therefore, those who adapt best will get the chance to survive. For instance, if there were no meat to be eaten but vegetables, only those who would adapt to the vegetables would have a higher chance of survival.
However, competition in society can be very brutal and should be minimized. The competition for resources such as jobs and food can lead to endless conflicts. This is majorly caused by how humans are large in numbers and have few resources. Therefore, competition should be reduced to achieve peace and equality. Conclusively, survival of the fittest generally describes how living organisms survive and has played a huge part in humans’ general social and economic lives.
