Discrimination
Discrimination is a socially unfair treatment of individuals or groups depending on their class or categories, such as gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and age. Discrimination mainly occurs to protect privileged and influential groups (“Healthy People 2030 | health.gov”, 2022). For example, research has shown that black men have the highest unemployment rates due to racial discrimination (“Brookings – Quality. Independence. Impact.” 2022). However, discrimination can be a teaching tool to reduce occurrence (Bernard, 1997).
Discrimination not only prevents one from fitting in but also causes stress, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, and other health issues, which eventually lead to complicated health outcomes. Discrimination can be challenging to distinguish due to several factors, one being beliefs. Several years ago, women were known to be ‘housewives’ and men the breadwinners. However, over the years, women can now work, but some jobs, such as construction, are still reserved for men. This explains how gender stereotypes strongly influence beliefs about one’s ability and are a form of discrimination that is hard to distinguish (“HBS Working Knowledge – Harvard Business School Faculty Research”, 2022).

Further, discrimination is brutal to eliminate since some people care about what others think, so if the majority discriminates against a particular group, even on a prejudicial basis, one will most likely avoid that group. For example, it is more likely that children living in a community where Muslims are generally discriminated against will not want to be around Muslims. Situations like this make it hard to eliminate discrimination, as the same discriminative habit will occur for generations. Further, business owners also have to consider consumers’ thoughts to make profits, so if customers do not like being served by people of colour, the business owner might be forced to get rid of them.
In summary, it is hard to distinguish and eliminate discrimination due to factors like societal beliefs. Nonetheless, people should understand that all people are equal despite their differences. Consistently, discrimination should be used as a teaching tool to reduce its occurrence.
