Strengths
The digital divide is somewhat beneficial as it enables communities with limited access to maintain their positive cultures and values. This occurs through a lack of access to aspects that may degrade the said aspects, such as pornographic content. Lack of access also allows the groups to allocate their limited resources to more important issues, such as basic needs. Children’s’ creativity is not stifled by unlimited access to various platforms (Basu, 2012).
Opportunities
Access to information technology positively boosts businesses and industrialization, leading to greater efficiency and higher profits. It also creates an opportunity to conduct business by providing internet services to those who are unable to access it individually. Individuals can access education through online courses and other personal improvement opportunities. Communication is enhanced as people keep in touch regardless of geographic boundaries (Steele, 2018).
Weaknesses
It is costly to maintain access to the internet, while engagement requires time. The lack of financial resources to maintain it widens the gap as more individuals lack access. The users’ privacy is compromised while on the various information technology platforms (Steele, 2018).
Threats
Most individuals who have access and are engaged are exposed to cybercrime and cyberbullying. Access to immoral and violent content also degrades the moral fabric as more individuals, especially children, remain unsupervised (Steele, 2018).
