After the completion of the session 1 team development process, there is a lot to learn that can be carried forward to the next sessions. These learnings will improve the effectiveness of the team and the achievement of the goals and objectives of the entire team process. Debriefing is an important part of the team development process. It helps to discuss issues relating to the team so that all team members are acquainted with the purpose and importance of the team (Zwikael & Unger-Aviram, 2010). Approaching the prospective team participants was exciting, but some aspects of the process also created some level of fear. The excitement was caused by the ability to work with others to fulfill this task. I believe that there will be good relationships arising from this collaboration. However, it was my fear that some people approached may not be willing to participate, which would affect the team development plan.

My request for a team development session was received relatively well. I requested the members to attend the session through email. Each of the members eventually responded to the email with their thoughts about the invite. While this was successful, it took more time than I wanted. I would improve this by using a communication strategy that has immediate feedback, such as a phone call.

What worked and did not work in soliciting a team to develop?

What worked in soliciting a team to develop was constant communication. There was always back-and-forth communication about the team. This ensured that everyone was informed about the team’s issues, such as the purpose, importance, and timings of the meetings. What did not work was the communication channels that were selected. In the future, choosing the right communication channels will be important. In particular, choosing communication strategies that allow the team to communicate in real time is important. For instance, face-to-face meetings, calls, or video conferencing would have been better strategies for all team members to share information at the same time. This would make discussions about the team easier and less time-consuming.

What did you learn about contracting from the questions asked by your team or from their responses to your request?

Contracting is a process of making agreements about issues relating to the team, such as the established roles and procedures (Raes et al., 2015). From this activity, I learned that contracting helps team members settle in faster into the team. It was easier for people to understand how they fit into the team and how useful they would be because of the contracting process. However, I also learned that this could be a source of conflict. There were conflicting preferences about the issues relating to the team. From this, I learned the importance of listening and understanding the perspectives of each team member. Coming into the team, every person had their own beliefs that affected their choices. It was important to communicate with each member and allow them to be objective in making choices pertaining to the team.
