Death Perspective

Death is inevitable. Often, it strikes naturally, while sometimes it may result from unavoidable incidents, including accidents or a strike by a natural phenomenon like a tsunami. Naturally, humans fear death due to the uncertainties associated with it. For instance, it may be hard to conceptualize one’s fate after dying or fully understand the nature of death: Death Perspective.

Death is peaceful for the dying person, especially for believers who have faith and understand that death is a transition to eternal life. However, death is frightening for the deceased’s kin and friends due to the separation and void the person leaves in their lives.

There are different transitions in life, which begin with birth, and death is the ultimate end of that transition. With the understanding that death is unescapable, one should be prepared to accept it when it strikes. Death may be premature or timely, and in either case, one should not be afraid of it since its outcome is better living.

Death is a source of comfort and healing. The best wish for an ailing person is death. At times, a person may have endured significant pain that prompts them to desire death as an end to their suffering. A person may have suffered from a terminal illness that has led to deteriorating conditions, becoming a burden to their caregivers.

“Death, be not proud, though some have called thee” (Donne n.d.). Often, one hears such a person wishing that God might take away their suffering, which translates to death since their condition cannot improve but rather keeps worsening. Once death takes them, the kin may express gratitude to God for relieving the departed’s pain and the burden they caused.

Unfortunately, at times, death steals and destroys people’s dreams. Premature deaths prevent individuals from reaching their full potential. Death may strike when a person is on their journey to discover themselves. “Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men” (Donne n.d.).

Death makes no choices about where to strike. It takes rich and poor, young and old, healthy and sick, and privileged and vulnerable, all alike. The nature of death prompts individuals to be vibrant and prepared to face it when it strikes.

On the other hand, the fear of death occurs naturally. Hence, it is a personal responsibility to understand the source of one’s fear and address it accordingly to enable a peaceful transition and acceptance of death.

As a believer, I believe in life after death. In the new life, death will be non-existent. The Christian faith gives believers hope for everlasting life, which strengthens them to face death with courage toward lifetime victory. “One short sleep past, we wake eternally” (Donne n.d.).

The understanding of life after death influences a Christian’s life here on earth. Only the righteous will inherit God’s kingdom and have eternal life. This aspiration influences how individuals live, their associations with others and God’s creation, and their obedience to God’s teachings and commands. A person whose life dwells in righteousness faces death with courage, ready to welcome and accept the gift of eternity.

Humans are conquerors over death. We were created for a purpose. It is our hope that death will not strike prior to accomplishing our dreams and fulfilling God’s will in our lives. However, if death comes, we embrace it and hope for a better life thereafter. One should not fear death; rather, the fear should be of not living ever again.
