Cultural Competency in Health Care
Cultural competency is the capability to be involved across cultures without limits of age, class, race, gender, or sexual orientation (Warrren, 2013). In mental health counseling, cross-cultural counseling, as well as cultural competency, underscores the significance of the patient’s culture and that of the counselor during the counseling session. Qualified instructor needs to be aware of the influence of their cultural values while interacting with patients and their peers (Uhlmann, 2011). Cultural values dictate how patients communicate with mental health professionals. For example, some communities long distrust individual governments and their healthcare system due to abuse and unfair medical treatments. The mental health counselor needs to be aware of the patient’s culture.
Cultural competence offers a pathway and a framework to achieve better patient health. Culturally and linguistically appropriate services, or CLAS, respond to patients’ preferences and needs. They also help improve health outcomes and decrease health disparities.
Linguistic competence, on the other hand, is crucial because it is an essential strategy for reducing disparities by improving access, utilization, and quality of care. Studies have documented the impact of a patient’s language deficiency (e.g., limited English proficiency) and racial and ethnic background in accessing and receiving safe and quality care.
Moreover, cultural competence helps the nurse to understand, communicate, and interact with people effectively. More specifically, it centers on Understanding the relationship between nurses and patients and acquiring knowledge of various cultural practices and views of the world.
Finally, Health literacy skills allow patients to take control of their well-being by making intelligent healthcare choices, improving their communication with doctors, and equipping them with information to advocate for themselves in a medical setting.
