Counterpoint: Addressing Climate Change Requires a Cool-Headed, Gradual Response by Amy Witherbee

The article ‘Counterpoint: Addressing Climate Change Requires a Cool-Headed, Gradual Response’ by Amy Witherbee is an informative piece that presents a different approach to the problem of climate change. Witherbee posits that there are several approaches to addressing and tackling the climate change problem. Despite the type of approach, climate change problem solutions involve changes. On the one hand, the change might be abrupt with immediate action that may endanger the earth, while on the other hand, Witherbee presents a slow, gradual approach with the end result in mind, which will pose long-term solutions to the climate change issues.

Witherbee makes the position on the argument clear in the article’s thesis. The thesis states: “While climate change is an issue that needs to be solved, alarmism over human-generated climate change is counterproductive to solving the problem. The United States should instead focus on slower changes to create long-term solutions” (p. 1). From the thesis statement, the article’s main points on solutions to climate change are climate change alarmism, slow changes, and long-term solutions. On climate change alarmism, Witherbee states that alarmism poses more dangers to the earth and the problem at hand, rather than solving the climate change problem. Instead of climate change alarmism, Witherbee presents slow changes, such as green initiatives currently being employed, which are projected to yield long-term solutions to climate change, thereby protecting the earth.

I believe Witherbee’s point of view is substantiated by the examples presented. Additionally, the presentation of her argument is professional and can be easily followed. It makes sense to start approaching climate change from a gradual perspective, as immediate responses implemented in the past seem only to derail funds and not yield immediate solutions. However, I also believe that some immediate approaches to climate change solutions will have long-term solutions, such as preserving forests and recycling rather than disposing of plastics.
